Roger Hirst, Moira Bruin and firefighters at Great Baddow Station

PFCC meets new on-call firefighters

The latest on-call all firefighters were put through their paces at a training session attended by Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner on Thursday 17th February.

The session took place at Great Baddow Fire Station, the most recent in the county to convert from a day crewed station to an on-call fire station.  Roger was joined by Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Moira Bruin and Watch Manager, Gary Dyer, where they observed the new recruits embarking on a training schedule that will see them equipped with the vital practical and technical skills needed to meet the demands of a modern-day firefighter.

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner said: “It is great to be able to come along to a fire station and watch the training our on-call firefighters do, making sure they are equipped to face the challenges ahead. They play a vital part in today’s fire and rescue service, and through their everyday lives and jobs bring a wealth of experience to the role. I want to personally thank all our firefighters for the work they do in our communities, through prevention work and by protecting people from harm, helping to make Essex safer.”

On-call firefighters all live locally to their station and balance their time between their ‘day’ jobs and providing cover as on-call firefighters throughout days, evenings and weekends.

Knife Bin design competition: Inspire others to live knife free

Essex Police, the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex and the Ben Kinsella Trust are teaming up to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying a knife by launching a new competition for Essex secondary school aged children.

There are 15 knife disposal bins across Southend, Essex and Thurrock and they need a revamp. The bins are very effective at collecting thousands of knives each year, removing them from our streets, homes and communities

We are inviting young people to design a positive anti-knife poster with three winning designs, one from each authority, chosen to replace the existing knife bin livery and be the new design of the Essex knife bins.

A thank you from Roger Hirst

On Friday the 19th of February, Essex County Fire and Rescue service dealt with over 500 calls between 10am and 9pm. Crews were dispatched to emergencies ranging from unrooted trees, flying debris, collapsed buildings as well as fighting fires. As well as carrying out their normal patrols, Essex Police also spent a lot of time dealing with the destruction caused by Storm Eunice.

Both emergency services were especially grateful to the members of public who offered their assistance. But most importantly, to everyone who followed the safety advice.

Roger said: "Thank you to our emergency teams who worked so hard to keep us all safe. It was an unprecedented day for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and Essex Police who dealt with the demand very well indeed. It is truly amazing to see how services and communities unite when faced with challenges like this."
