PACT: Meltdown!
Why melting poles matter, what can COP29 do about it, and how can we help.
Venue: Penrith Library St Andrews Churchyard, Penrith
Date & Time: Fri, 15/11/2024 - 19:00 to 20:30
Coinciding with the United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Azerbaijan (COP 29), this talk will provide an update on the impacts of climate change and consider why it remains vitally important to stick to the climate goals reached in Paris in 2015. We will look in particular at a range of “climate tipping points” – irreversible changes to the Earth system – which provide the primary reason why it’s essential that urgent action is taken to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The talk will focus in particular on the impacts of climate change on the Earth’s polar regions that are dominated by ice. With these areas warming much more rapidly than anywhere else, we will examine their local environmental impacts on both glaciers (surface ice) and permafrost (underground ice) and their wider implications for the planet as a whole.
The talk will conclude with a consideration of the progress we’ve made since Paris, the magnitude of the challenge ahead and the dramatic transformations we now need to make.
Richard is a PACT Director and a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at Keele University. He is an expert on glaciers, permafrost and the landscape impacts of Arctic Climate Change and has spent over 25 years working in Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. Much of his work now focuses on climate solutions and the ways in which we can reduce the energy and carbon emissions we use in our homes and our day-to-day travel.
Doors open at 6:30pm. Refreshments will be served before the talk starts promptly at 7pm
