Penrith Town Council has agreed to take the lead in providing the May Day Carnival for the town in 2025.
The May Day Carnival is a key event in the town’s calendar which brings together local charities, community groups and performers to deliver a programme of entertainment for local people and tourists alike.
The future of the event had been put into doubt following the Penrith Lions Club (who have delivered an exceptional May Day Carnival for 40 years) making the decision to bow out from taking the lead in organising the event.
On Monday 15 July 2024, Cllr. Charlie Shepherd brought a motion to Council to take the lead in providing the May Day Event. This was unanimously agreed by the Council.
Cllr. Doug Lawson, Penrith Town Council Chair & Penrith Mayor said:
“On behalf of the Council, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Penrith Lions Club, a voluntary organisation who have put so much time and effort into organising the May Day Carnival event for the town for 40 years.
“Looking forward to 2025, I am so pleased to see the Council agreeing to take a lead role. I’m sure it’s something our residents would have hoped and perhaps expected of us!
“The Council previously supported the Penrith Lions Club with the delivery of the 2024 event - allowing us to develop an understanding of the event planning and requirements – so I am confident that we will be able to deliver a fantastic event for the town next year.
“The Council has already committed to working with other organisations in Penrith including the Arts and Culture Stakeholder Group to make this a great event, so watch this space in the coming months for more information about next year’s May Day Carnival!”

Cllr. Charlie Shepherd, Chair of the Council’s Finance Committee said:
“The May Day Event provides a terrific opportunity for residents to come together and celebrate the beginning of Summer through an enjoyable day of entertainment.
“I believe that the people of Penrith expect that the event continues – so I am glad to see that the Council agreed with the motion put forward!”

Get involved with Stomping Ground's Penrith Wild Play Day at Thacka Beck Field!
The event will take place on Monday 29 July 2024, between 11am - 2pm at Thacka Beck Field.
Penrith Town Council has fully funded the Wild Play Day, ensuring that any child / young person wanting to attend is able to - free of charge.
The day itself will involve building dens, making and creating, circus fun, bubble making, playing in Stomping Ground's mud kitchen, and the opportunity to play music with BlueJam Arts!
Bring the whole family and a picnic for a packed day at Thacka Beck Field!
Important information: Thacka Beck Field can be accessed from Tynefield Drive, Carleton Drive and the A686. There are paved paths with steps down from both Tynefield Drive and Carleton Drive. There is a gated entrance from the A686 onto Thacka Beck Field. All access locations lead onto a hardstanding path which cuts through the field and leads to where you can find the event taking place. Stomping Ground strongly encourage that families to walk to the event, where possible, as parking is limited.
Note: Thank you to everyone who has been in touch over this past week regarding the Wild Play event at Thacka Beck Field. During heavy rains last Saturday evening, there was wastewater flooding on parts of Thacka Beck Field (towards the A686).
The Council reported this to United Utilities who has since been to the field and undertaken a clean-up.
The Wild Play event planned at Thacka Beck Field on Monday 29 July 2024, will still proceed with the activity being moved to an alternative area of the field.
Penrith Town Council, working with Plug & Play, Eden Valley Artistic Network and the Penrith Arts & Culture group, has funded and arranged for bands / artists to play around Penrith on Saturdays across the Summer.
Sounds Around Town showcases the enormous wealth of local talent we have in Penrith (and the surrounding area) and aims to encourage more visitors into the town centre and increase the ‘dwell time’ of those visitors by giving them bands / artists worth sticking around for!
We are now heading towards the end of the summer season, with six acts currently scheduled to play across the next six Saturdays around Penrith:
- 27 July: Peter Rowan, Angel Square
- 3 August, The Readies, Bandstand
- 10 August, Carolyn Francis, New Squares
- 17 August, Gary Atkinson, Bandstand
- 24 August, Kenneth Wilson, New Squares
- 31 August, Squeezebox, Bandstand
All bands / artists play around 2pm and finish on or before 4pm. Check those acts out if you're in and around the town centre on any of those dates!

At its meeting on Monday 15 July, the Council considered a request from the Carleton Park Recreation Group for the Council to request the asset transfer of Carleton Park from Westmorland and Furness Council.
The request was made on the basis of the Council's exemplary management of Fairhill Playing Field which demonstrates high standards of maintenance and community engagement.
The Council agreed to support the request from the Carleton Park Recreation Group and will now write to Westmorland and Furness Council asking that they consider the asset transfer to the Town Council.
Moving forward the Council is hopeful that this will lead to the restarting of discussions with Westmorland & Furness Council for the further transfer of more of the town's assets to the Council.
This financial year has already seen the Council commit almost £20,000 worth of grant funding to organisations delivering projects for the people of Penrith:
- Meals on Wheels - £2,500, Start a new service into Penrith
- Penrith Rugby Club, £3,000, Installation of Solar Panels
- Penrith BID, £3,099, Town Centre Greening Project
- Eden Dodgeball Club, £575, New Under 15 years Dodgeball Group
- Bluejam Arts, £3,480, Family painting sessions, 1yr Project
- Wetheriggs Utd FC, £2,000, Clubhouse facility improvements
- Carleton Park Group, £5,000, Multi Use Games Area at Carleton Park
As a result, the Council has recently “topped up” its grant budget, meaning there remains funding available to support local community organisations, charities, Social Enterprises and Community Interest Companies deliver services, projects and events for the benefit of the people of Penrith.
