The Eden Rivers Trust has received a grant of £2 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of their exciting heritage partnership project, Access to Eden: breaking barriers, building bridges.
Added to money raised by the project’s partners, that will see a total of £2.6 million spent on people and the environment in Penrith and the wider Eden area over the next four years.
Access to Eden aims to break down the physical, social and cultural barriers that prevent people from accessing the natural heritage of Eden and build the bridges needed to give them the confidence to enjoy our blue and green spaces. The project intends to remove barriers for Eden’s special wildlife, connect habitats and promote nature recovery.
This will include improvements to walks and trails, coupled with better information plus opportunities for all ages and abilities to get closer to nature, so that more people can explore, enjoy and care for Eden’s rivers.
Another major part of the project involves community-led practical conservation projects at eight ‘doorstep’ sites that are within easy reach of urban areas along the length of the river Eden - creating sustainable, healthy, thriving natural spaces.
In Penrith, local people will have two new places on their doorstep; Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Cold Springs Community Nature Reserve and Eden Rivers Trust’s Community Tree Nursery.
Work started last year on these accessible spaces where communities are taking the lead in shaping their development; volunteering to dig, build and plant features and enjoying learning about how to grow trees, look after nature and simply enjoy the view. Both sites will have a packed programme of events and opportunities for local people to volunteer over the next four years.
A Penrith Town Council spokesperson said:
"Penrith Town Council are proud to be working in partnership with the Eden Rivers Trust and other project partners to access a share of £2 million worth of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the benefit of the people of Penrith and those in the surrounding Eden Valley area.
"The Council has committed to collaborating and delivering projects (in Penrith) as part of Access to Eden which relate to climate change, connectivity and open green space - and is also partly funding the Eden Rivers Trust’s Community Tree Nursery as part of the Nurturing Nature in Penrith aspect of the project.
"The Council is excited for the Access to Eden project to commence and looks forward to working with partners for the successful delivery of various projects in Penrith."

Following an invitation from HM The King’s Pageantmaster to all parish and town Councils, Penrith Town Council will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday 6 June.
The Town Council will be lighting a gas beacon in St Andrew’s Churchyard at 9.15pm, the time prescribed by the Pageantmaster. Prior to this Committed 2 Rock will be singing some period songs commencing at about 8.30pm. The gas beacon will be lit by a veteran and, as it’s lit, another veteran will read out the International Tribute. This will be followed by one final song from Committed 2 Rock.
We would also ask residents to put a light of peace in their window to commemorate those who lost their lives on 6 June and as a symbol of peace for events happening in the world at the present time.
Like in 2018 when we commemorated the 100 year anniversary of WWI, lets get the light of peace around the world on social media with the #lightofpeacepenrith
