At its meeting of Full Council on Monday 17 July 2023, Penrith Town Council co-opted David Knaggs as councillor for the Penrith East Ward.
Ordinary co-option following a non-contested election is a process whereby a qualifying person can be appointed by the Council during the course of a Council meeting to fill a vacant seat after election.
Councillor Knaggs has been co-opted for the duration of the council term.
|
On Councillor Knaggs’ appointment, Penrith Town Council Chair & Mayor Doug Lawson said:
“I am pleased to welcome Councillor Knaggs to Penrith Town Council.
“The people of the Penrith East Ward can be left assured that they will be represented by a councillor who has the best interests of the community at heart and who will work tirelessly to represent their views.
“I look forward to working with Councillor Knaggs over the term of the council.”
The vacancy for Penrith East Ward arose after the local elections on 4 May 2023 which left one seat vacant for Penrith Town Council. This is because only two candidates stood for the three seats available.

An event to launch a new Dementia Friendly Communities Partnership for Eden was held in Penrith earlier this week.
The well-attended event offered dementia advice and support for residents and gave local businesses and services the opportunity to learn about the changes they can make to support customers living with Dementia.
The Eden Dementia Friendly Communities Partnership (which Penrith Town Council are a partner of) will raise awareness of dementia risk factors, prevention strategies, and early signs of dementia, as well as providing information on local support, services and activities for individuals affected by this condition, and their families and carers.

Penrith Town Council, working with Plug & Play, EVAN and the Penrith Arts & Culture group, have funded and arranged for bands / artists to play around Penrith on every Saturday across the Summer.
Sounds Around Town showcases the enormous wealth of local talent we have in Penrith (and the surrounding area) and aims to encourage more visitors into the town centre, and increase the ‘dwell time’ of those visitors by giving them bands / artists worth sticking around for!
As the name suggests, bands / artists play in different areas to encourage footfall throughout the town centre benefitting more local businesses and increasing the vibrancy of the whole town.
All bands / artists play around 2pm and finish on or before 4pm.
This Saturday we have the Lakeland Fiddlers playing at St Andrews around 2pm.
Check them out if you're in and around the town centre on Saturday!
