Plymouth City Council and Homes England launch new City Centre Vision
Plymouth’s city centre could see up to 10,000 new homes built over the next decade as part of a new working relationship with Homes England.
The Council and Homes England have produced a new ‘Plymouth City Centre Vision’ which sets out a shared ambition to provide 10,000 new homes in the city centre and surrounding area.
The vision recognises that there will be around £4.4 billion of Government investment in HM Naval Base Devonport over the next 10 years and that this will stimulate the demand for new homes, with Babcock requiring 5,500 new employees and a further 2,000 construction jobs being created in the Dockyard.
Plymouth Leaders Prioritise Future Skills Development
Discussions to tackle the skills shortages in Plymouth have taken place at a roundtable meeting, hosted by John Gane, Managing Director for Babcock’s Devonport site and attended by key city education providers and employers.
The meeting held in Babcock’s Henley building at Devonport Royal Dockyard was attended by 22 people to better understand the risks and opportunities around skills and to scope potential solutions ready to support the mapped future growth of the city.
Industry leaders discuss how new ports strategy can drive city’s growth plans
Industry leaders have been invited to play a part in Plymouth’s ambitious plans to drive growth in its four ports and further strengthen its position as a leader in marine innovation and transitioning to net zero.
A special roundtable meeting for industry leaders heard how a new Ports Strategy sets out a clear vision for growing the economic contribution of Plymouth’s ports, creating green jobs and ensuring the city remains at the forefront of marine technology, sustainable development and maritime skills.

Public Health plea to businesses to help reduce numbers of children vaping
Plymouth’s Director of Public Health, Professor Steve Maddern, is writing to businesses across the city to seek support to bring national efforts to reduce vaping in children to local businesses across Plymouth.
Recent data shows that in the UK, despite the sales of vapes being age restricted, the proportion of 11-17 year-olds currently vaping has risen from 4 per cent in 2020 to 7 per cent in 2022. In Plymouth, 10 per cent of young people surveyed reported using vapes, and this is suspected to be even higher amongst some groups of children. This is despite the sale of vapes being age restricted.
Evidence shows that vaping of any kind is not recommended for children and young people due to the potential health risks. Short term effects can include headaches, dizziness and sore throats, with long term effects not yet known. Vaping also causes issues in schools and can impact on learning.
