Powering up the city’s economy
Plymouth will cement its reputation as the powerhouse of the region with an exciting new plan that aims to deliver 8,000 new jobs, 10,000 new homes and 1,000 new businesses.
The new economic strategy delivery plan details an impressive 55 projects – some of which are already in motion– that will turn this ambition into reality.
Projects range in scale from the recently-established Growth Alliance Plymouth – a partnership between the Council, Babcock and the Royal Navy, working with across government departments to capitalise on the Government's £4.4 billion investment in defence at HM Devonport Naval Base, through to initiatives designed to supercharge Plymouth’s already strong marine sector such as creating a maritime autonomous system centre of expertise.
Altilium reaches 50 employee milestone
Devon-based clean technology company Altilium is proud to announce that it has grown to over 50 employees as it continues to expand its EV battery recycling operations, creating new green jobs and attracting international investment to the region.
The latest expansion follows significant inward investment in the company in the first quarter of 2025, including a $2.5m investment from leading global bank Mizuho Bank and a $5m strategic investment from leading Japanese trading and investment group Marubeni Corporation.
Plotting a course for ports' success
Plymouth should continue to build on the current strengths of its four ports to ensure they grow in a highly dynamic and globally competitive sector – that’s the key signal from the city’s first ever port strategy.
The report concludes that the future success of Plymouth’s ports will be defined by its ability to maintain its unique blend of maritime activities, support a diverse range of skills and jobs, celebrate and protect its environment while implementing sustainable changes towards net zero.
Igniting Plymouth's Creative Spark!
Plymouth Culture has unveiled an exhilarating Creative Industries Plan that promises to catapult Plymouth into the spotlight as a vibrant hub for creativity and innovation.
The creative industries are a powerhouse in the UK, outpacing the national economy by expanding twice as fast between 2010 and 2022, and contributing a remarkable 5.7% to the UK's GVA.
The Great South West region, including Plymouth, has been a hotbed for creative job growth, matching the fastest rates in the country from 2019 to 2022. Now, Plymouth stands poised to become the urban epicentre of this regional boom.
Tackling Poverty Together in Plymouth
Poverty impacts everything from life expectancy to job opportunities and rising costs of essentials like food and energy bills are making it worse. We need to work together to take action and break down barriers.
Plymouth City Council's Building Bridges to Opportunity programme aims to capture how current strategies and initiatives are addressing poverty, identify areas of excellence and gaps, and share learning across the city. By co-developing an anti-poverty framework with partners and residents, the council will create evidence-based, locally informed approaches.
