Works to repair and strengthen the Devil's Point tidal pool wall started this week.
The facilities around Firestone Bay are also being improved, including new handrails, new lockers for swimmers and repairs to the steps.
The work is expected to take around 10 weeks and the aim is to keep the pool available for swimmers and paddlers as much as possible.
Because of its vulnerable coastal position, this popular tidal pool takes a battering from time, tide and weather and needs constant upkeep.
A bumper programme of outdoor summer activities for 11 to 18 year-olds is under way.
The programme includes free swimming sessions and youth clubs at our outdoor swimming pools at Tinside and Mount Wise and activities at Poole Farm in the heart of Derriford Community Park.
Veterans, serving military personnel, civic dignitaries and residents joined a D-Day 80 commemoration service in Saltash honouring the thousands of servicemen who left Plymouth for the beaches of Normandy 80 years ago.
And in the evening a beacon was lit at the Royal Citadel to remember those who took part in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944.
You can see D-Day displays in our libraries, which have also been hosting a series of talks about D-Day.
This weekend sees the 300th anniversary of the birth of a man who left a big legacy in Plymouth.
Pioneering civil engineer John Smeaton was responsible for building a new Eddystone lighthouse in the 1750s, using an innovative dovetailed block designed to help it withstand the elements.
The lighthouse was dismantled in the 1880s and moved from Eddystone Reef to The Hoe, where it became Plymouth’s most famous landmark.
You can find an artwork showing the tower's radical dovetail design in the pavement next to the roundabout at the junction of Millbay Road and West Hoe Road, created as part of the Plymouth Waterfront Walkway (opens pdf).
Smeaton, who has born on 8 June 1724, was also responsible for another feature many of us still use regularly – Stonehouse Bridge. One of several bridges built he designed over that period, Ha’penny Bridge, as it became known, brought immeasurable benefits to the residents of the three towns.
Smeaton is still inspiring hundreds of children in Plymouth to consider a career in civil engineering.
Throughout June, Building Plymouth is inviting primary school children to visit the former lighthouse, where they will meet modern civil engineers and learn more about Smeaton, who is known as the ‘father of civil engineering’.
The partnership with The Box, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the University of Plymouth aims to inspire children to understand more about the city’s major engineering projects both past and present and about career pathways into civil engineering.
