A major new shopping and leisure facility at Derriford is providing great opportunities for apprentices and trainees to get on-the-job training in construction.
Work on the Derriford District Centre is at the halfway stage and due to finish this September. Confirmed tenants include a Marks & Spencer Foodhall, an Aldi supermarket, a Costa Coffee, a PureGym gym, a Pets Corner shop and an Oggy Oggy pasty shop.
Developers ADC Kimberley Ltd and main contractors Devon Contractors revealed the site is helping apprentices in a range of construction trades to gain experience on a major building site.
There are currently five or six apprentices on site at any one time; three employed by roofing and cladding contractor Progressive and the others working for bricklaying subcontractor Plym Bricklaying.
Across the build period the developers and their contractors will provide apprentice opportunities for up to 14 people including in dry-lining and landscaping.
We have launched a new campaign to promote the wide range of careers available in our Children’s Services, with new and exciting opportunities for staff.
A comprehensive transformation programme is in place to drive improvements in our Children’s Services, with one of the key priorities to ensure there is a stable, well-supported and high-performing workforce.
We are now seeking permanent staff to join, with a variety of roles available, including experienced social workers, team managers, service managers and heads of service.
If you are a qualified children’s social care professional, visit our new online hub to see the opportunities available, find out more about the benefits available and watch videos of current staff working in the department.
More than 7,000 new homes delivered, 48 Council sites released to developers and nearly 400 empty properties brought back into use.
These are just a few successes of our long-running Plan for Homes, which supports a variety of new and affordable housing to tackle housing needs and homelessness while addressing existing poor housing conditions.
This week, the programme was debated by our Growth and Infrastructure Overview and Scrutiny Committee, ahead of the publication of an updated version this spring.
There are now just months to go before the opening of The Park, Plymouth's brand new crematorium off Haye Road in Plympton.
With construction now nearing completion, a foundation stone has been laid outside one of the new ceremony rooms.
The Park is being built with Plymouth Limestone, with designs inspired by the landscape. An on-site café to cater for people attending funerals and for use as a venue for wakes is also being constructed.
The facility is set to open this summer.
There is still time to visit The Box this half-term.
As well as its impressive permanent collection, The Box is home to some fascinating exhibitions, including John Akomfrah: Arcadia, the UK premiere of a major new multi-screen film commission by a visionary artist and filmmaker.
It features beautiful visuals of landscapes from across the globe, stunning underwater footage and a haunting soundtrack.
There are also only a few days left to visit the People and Place: Art Collection Showcase; a presentation featuring oil paintings, sculpture, ceramics and more.
The Box is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday and there’s no need to book.
The Lord Mayor Selection Committee has recommended that Councillor Tina Tuohy should be the Lord Mayor of Plymouth for 2024/25.
Councillor Tuohy (pictured with current Lord Mayor, Councillor Mark Shayer) has been a Ham Ward Councillor since 2009.
She said: “It is a huge honour to be asked to be the Lord Mayor Designate. Plymouth is such a lovely place to live, work and visit. I have lived here for over 50 years and seen this city grow and change, I look forward to the year of office.”
The recommendation will be put to the Full Council on 18 March before it is fully agreed.
