The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd Justin Welby, will lead this year's Remembrance Sunday Service on Plymouth Hoe.

The service, which remembers and pays tribute to all those who lost their lives in both World Wars and in all conflicts, takes place at the Royal Naval Memorial and will start at 11am on Sunday 12 November.

Archbishop Justin will be joined by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, the Lord Lieutenant of Devon and the Bishop of Plymouth, along with other civic and military dignitaries.

The service will be streamed on our YouTube channel. Further details will be made available shortly.

Over 200 trees to spruce up Armada Way

Vision for Trees for Armada Way

For those pining for more mature, taller trees on Armada Way, we have listened and more than 200 trees now feature in our current proposals for the scheme.

The plans, which are currently being consulted on, propose a total of 202 trees in the north of Armada Way. While many of these would be new trees, we have also found a way to keep the majority of the trees that were due to be felled earlier this year.

The principle of ‘right tree, right place’ has been integral to the design. And species have been carefully selected so that they can thrive in an urban environment and changing climate.

Some have been picked for particular wildlife appeal and others for their shady canopy or beautiful blossom and leaves.

The calm after Storm Ciarán

Fallen tree during Storm Ciarán

With winds calmed and slivers of blue sky beginning to appear between the grey, here's a little look at what our teams responded to during Storm Ciarán.

The Environment Agency’s weather station recorded just over a third of the month’s expected rainfall in just over 24 hours and, despite proactive inspections of flood ‘hotspots’ and gullies before the storm, some localised flooding did occur.

Our highways teams responded to 32 emergency flooding incidents around the city from 2.15am on Thursday, clearing water and making areas safe for pedestrians and motorists.

But it wasn’t just the rain…the Met Office station at Mount Batten recorded windspeeds of up to 54mph. This meant an equally busy time for our tree teams, who attended 16 incidents, inspecting and helping to clear fallen trunks and branches from highways and pavements.

All of our bin crews were able to go out on their rounds and many people stopped to thank them for their work – if you were one of them your kind words were very much appreciated!

Warm, welcoming spaces open over winter

Hands around warm mug

This winter, venues across Plymouth are opening their doors to provide a warm welcome as part of the city’s cost of living support for residents.

More than 20 Welcoming Spaces, which include churches, libraries and community centres, have already committed to opening during the colder months.

They all offer somewhere comfortable to sit down in a warm environment and lots offer extras, such as free activities, advice, WiFi or refreshments.

You’ll be able to stay warm, meet other people in your community and find more support to help you if you’re struggling with the cost of living.

New hockey facilities for Plymouth

Hockey players in Plymouth could soon be using brand new facilities at Stoke Damerel Community College.

As part of the city’s ongoing investment in sports facilities, a brand new, 2G sand pitch will be installed for both school and community use, with modern floodlighting to ensure it can be used all year round.

A smaller rubber-crumb 3G surface and an improved grass playing pitch are also part of the overall offering.

Two information events are being held at the college next week.

Green Careers Week

Next week is Green Careers Week, which celebrates jobs that help to protect or restore the environment and prevent climate change. These jobs can be in any industry, not just those typically seen as ‘green’.

If you’d like to find out more about the green career opportunities on offer, Skills Launchpad is hosting a net zero careers fair with British Gas and City College Plymouth.

Go along to Barclays in Armada Way on Thursday 9 November from 11.30am to 3pm. A panel of experts will be on hand to guide you through the net zero careers on offer at British Gas, as well as the college courses you need to get you there.
