Felled trees removed from Armada Way

Armada Way clean up in progress

The felled trees that have blighted Armada Way for the last six months have now been removed.

The clear-up was able to take place after ecologists confirmed that the bird nesting season had ended and no wildlife would be affected. Crews moved in at 5am on Thursday to start the long-awaited work and ecologists remained on site throughout the day.

Council crews have been busy cleaning up the site today, removing litter and cutting grass.

We will shortly be publishing new designs for Armada Way and asking for your views. An independent engagement company is managing the consultation and you can visit the Let's Talk Armada Way portal to sign up for alerts about when and how to give your views.

Plymouth Community History Festival graphic

Plymouth’s annual history festival is returning with a week-long programme packed with talks, walks, events and displays.

This year’s festival kicks off on Saturday 30 September with an event at The Box featuring more than 20 local history groups, behind-the-scenes tours and a performance by Nigerian poet, Bola.

A series of talks during the week will start with a presentation on the Jack Leslie campaign, while walks will take people to a range of sites to explore the city’s heritage, including the queer district, the changing face of Stonehouse, Americans in Plymouth and the history of cinema.

A closing event hosted at The Plot in Union Street on Friday 6 October will bring the festival to an end in celebratory style with African food, storytelling and proverbs.

How to watch unrolling of rarely seen painting

Lady Jane Grey at her place of execution section

Visitors to The Box will be able to watch the careful unrolling of a giant painting that hasn’t been seen in public for decades.

Plymouth-born artist Solomon Hart, who spent a year working on Lady Jane Grey at Her Place of Execution (section pictured above), is widely considered to be one of the most influential Jewish artists of 19th century Britain and was the first Jewish person to be elected to the Royal Academy.

The conservation in action event starts on 27 September when experts will slowly unroll the painting. They will then be assessing its condition before it goes on public view between 30 September and 1 October.

Opening hours are 10am to 5pm. Admission is free and there’s no need to book.

Solar gain for city centre car park

Councillor Briars Delve with the new solar panels at the Theatre Royal car park

We've installed 222 new solar panels on the upper roof deck of the Theatre Royal car park to help catch rays to be transformed into green energy.

The panels will power the entire car park and the excess goes back into the Plymouth grid.

The total installation can produce up to 94kWp per year, saving up to 17 tonnes of CO2 emissions – the equivalent to an average petrol car driving from Land's End to John O’Groats and back again 47 times.

The car park currently has over 550 spaces and the solar panels are on the upper deck, in 50 bays that are seldom used by drivers.
