Plymouth-based employers are invited to learn how the city’s new online Employer Hub is bringing together localised solutions to help address recruitment, employment, workforce skills and training challenges at a breakfast networking event taking place on Tuesday 28 February, 8am to 10am at Boringdon Park Golf Club.
During this event, guests will hear from speakers including Jonathan Keeble the FSB Plymouth Chair; and Paul Turner, Chair of Plymouth’s Employment and Skills Board, and HR Director at Princess Yachts.
The new online Employer Hub will be of particular interest to local small to medium sized businesses, recruiting managers and HR professionals, and this is a great chance to be the first to view the new digital resource, which will be presented by Emma Hewitt, Skills Lead at Plymouth City Council.

Proposals to introduce a £1 parking charge at Plymouth’s three park and ride sites will be advertised from Monday 20 February.
If approved, the £1 charge will allow people to park at the Coypool, Milehouse and George Junction park and ride sites for up to 24 hours.
All income will be ringfenced to supporting the continued operation of the city’s non-commercial (Council-funded) bus routes, as agreed by Cabinet members in November.

Following highly successful previous rounds, the Marine Business Technology Centre is delighted to announce a new Innovation Grant call for Devon-based Advanced Marine SMEs.
Eligible businesses have the opportunity to receive 75% support for their innovation programmes up to a total project value of £4,000.00. Funding can be used for consultancy support, specialist time and scientific studies.
Closing date is the 31 March 2023 and projects need to be completed by 30th June 2023. Please note grants are limited and will be distributed on a first come first served basis.

Plymouth and South Devon Freeport welcomes their new Chair and permanent CEO. Jan Ward CBE commences her role as Chair this month and Richard May will take up the CEO role permanently from 1 March, having previously held the role as interim since last year.
These pivotal permanent appointments will continue to help shape and steer the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, which was given the green light by government last December following approval of its Full Business Case. As just one of eight Freeports in England, it will play a central role in unlocking investment opportunities, delivering infrastructure and promoting innovation both in the UK and globally.

Speculation is mounting that Plymouth-based luxury boat-builder Princess Yachts is about to be sold to a US private equity business. The company has told PlymouthLive that it is unable to comment at this point but it is understood a deal could be struck this week.
In May 2022, PlymouthLive reported that Princess Yachts’ private equity owner L Catterton had hired bankers to find a buyer. Now it seems US private equity investor KPS Capital Partners is in the frame to acquire the UK’s largest luxury boat maker.

Net Zero Heat: Rapid Assessment of Building Fabric Performance - New IUK Competition
The aim of this Innovate UK (IUK) competition is to accelerate the shift to a net zero economy. The focus is on reducing the cost and time required for assessing the fabric performance of buildings and assuring net zero performance targets are achieved.
The competition will invest up to £1.5 million in industrial research projects and experimental development projects. Each project’s total grant funding request must be between £100,000 and £250,000.
The deadline for applications is 22 March 2023.
Launch of IUK’s Feasibility Studies in Quantum Computing Applications Competition
Innovate UK (IUK) is funding innovative solutions to industrial problems using quantum computing (QC). The aim is to bring together end-users from many industry sectors, with experts in QC. They will identify and develop use cases in the UK that demonstrate the potential and commercial benefits of this technology.
Up to £8 million has been allocated to fund feasibility projects in this competition. Each project’s total costs must not exceed £500,000.
The deadline for applications is 29 March 2023.
IUK Launches Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure Competitions for UK Maritime Sector
The Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure (ZEVI) Competitions aim to transform the UK into a global leader in the design and manufacturing of clean maritime technologies.
There are three Innovate UK (IUK) competitions, running in parallel:
Up to £77 million has been allocated to fund industrial research projects and experimental development projects. Individual project costs must be between £3 million and £40 million. The total grant cannot exceed £20 million.
The deadline for applications is 19 April 2023.
Nokia Bell Labs Prize for Global Tech Innovators Launched for 2023
The Nokia Bell Labs Prize is a competition for innovators from around the globe. It seeks to recognise innovations that solve the key challenges facing humanity and provides selected innovators the opportunity to collaborate with Nokia Bell Labs researchers to help realise their vision.
The competition has a total prize pot of $175,000 (around £146,000) which will be awarded as follows: First prize: $100,000 (around £83,000), Second prize: $50,000 (around £41,000) and Third prize: $25,000 (around £21,000)
The deadline for applications is 21 April 2023.
Hydrogen Storage and Distribution Supply Chain - New IUK R&D Competition Announced
This Innovate UK competition will focus on the development of the hydrogen economy. The aim is to develop new ways of delivering integrated hydrogen storage and distribution systems and the associated supply chains.
Up to £4.35 million has been allocated to fund feasibility, industrial research, and experimental development projects. Each project’s total costs must be up to a maximum of £1 million.
The deadline for applications is 26 April 2023.
