A period of meaningful community engagement will take place in February before the designs for Armada Way are finalised.
At a meeting of the full Council today (30 January) councillors voted on a motion in response to a petition from STRAW about the Armada Way trees.
The petition contained around 10,000 signatures, with around 5,000 from postcodes within Plymouth’s boundaries. The petition requested the Council to ‘incorporate a bit more of what we already have’.
The petition was debated as 5,000 signatures were received.
Details of the engagement will be made available in the coming days.
For the first time, residents in Plymouth will need to show photographic ID to vote in person at this year’s local elections which are being held on 4 May.
Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a full or provisional UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence; some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass and a blue badge.
Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID can now apply for free Voter Authority Certificate online or by completing a paper form which is available from the Council. The deadline to apply for this ID is 25 April 2023.
Plymouth City Council has been invited to join the national Inclusive Growth Network as part of its commitment to build back better.
The Council has supported Inclusive Growth since 2016 and launched Plymouth Charter which provides networking and support to almost 300 of the city's businesses.
The Inclusive Growth Network is hosted by the Centre for Progressive Policy, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and supported by partners Metro Dynamics and the Royal Society of Arts. Membership consists of 14 councils and combined authorities leading the drive for inclusive local economies across the UK.

Cattewater Harbour Commissioners are to take over responsibility for managing and maintaining the Barbican landing stage as a measure to help ensure its long term future and reduce costs to the local tax payers.
Plymouth City Council is making a decision to hand back the lease to the commissioners for a section of the foreshore and seabed next to Commercial Wharf, which includes the landing stage. Returning the lease to the commissioners means they will become responsible for running the stage which is used by a number of ferry and tour vessel operators.
Cattewater Harbour Commissioners are a statutory port authority for the Cattewater Harbour and also operate civil pilotage for the Port of Plymouth.

The first cohort of Assistant Practitioner apprentices started their programme at Plymouth Marjon University today. The Higher Level Apprenticeship Assistant Practitioner course is one of twelve new health programmes launching at the University this year.
Marjon welcomed 24 students to its new apprenticeship programme from Livewell Southwest and University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The new students will learn in Plymouth Marjon’s brand-new simulation suite.
The suite, which will move into the University’s new Community Wellbeing Hub set to open in 2025, features a full acute hospital ward with simulation patients and an intensive care bay, as well as a GP surgery and home set-up so that students learn how to care for patients in a variety of settings.
Designed to provide heightened understanding of the impacts of climate change and direct human activities on the global coastal ocean, a new project being delivered by scientists at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has been awarded £6m worth of UK funding.
The multi-disciplinary ‘Future states Of the global Coastal ocean: Understanding for Solutions’ or ‘FOCUS’ project will support the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), encouraging a more ‘global perspective on coastal ocean science’ and advancing the understanding of measures that can be taken to improve the resilience, adaptation, and mitigation of global changes in the coastal ocean environment.

The Veteran’s Village will host wide range of local charities and organisations each offering information, advice and support.
The day will finish with an outstanding free evening concert, entertaining the crowds with a fantastic range of live music for all to enjoy.

Last week, more than 700 students aged 8 to 18 from schools across Plymouth visited the Guildhall to experience MediFest 2023.
MediFest is the largest showcase of careers in the health, healthcare technology, care, science and sports sectors across the South West.
At the event, students participated in activities and science experiments, helping them to understand the vast variety of jobs in the sector in a fun and interactive way.

Dyers’ Company Launches Seed Capital Investment Fund
The Dyers’ Company has launched a new Seed Capital Investment Fund designed to support innovation in, and the commercialisation of, business ideas with a link to colour or colouration.
The initiative is relevant to a range of industries/activities, including colour chemistry and science, food technology, healthcare (eg medical dyes), engineering, sustainable dyeing, textiles production for fashion and interiors.
Initial investments of up to £25,000 per venture will be considered for fledgling businesses and entrepreneurs seeking to transform their innovative ideas into successful businesses. The fund is intended to enable applicants reach an identifiable commercial milestone, eg proof of concept prototype.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 28 February 2023.
Co-op Foundation’s Carbon Innovation Fund – New Focus for Round 2
The Co-op Foundation has published the guidance notes for the second round of its £3.5 million Carbon Innovation Fund.
The new round of funding will deliver against the sustainability element of the Co-op Foundation’s youth-led vision and strategy by focusing on creating a more equitable and sustainable food and farming industry.
Grants of between £75,000 and £200,000 will be awarded to organisations working to reduce the UK’s reliance on soy animal feed and/or synthetic fertilisers.
The Co-op Foundation is running a free webinar on 1 February (11am to 12.15pm) where it will share more information on the Fund and how to apply as well as providing an opportunity for groups to ask questions. Groups will need to reserve a spot on eventbrite.
Round Two will open for applications on 1 February 2023 (after the event concludes at midday) and close on 28 February 2023.
IUK Announces Safety Tech Challenge to Disrupt Sharing of Child Sexual Abuse Material
The aim of this Innovate UK (IUK) competition is to enhance UK capabilities in protecting all users online, but in particular preventing harm of children online.
IUK has allocated up to £700,000 to fund innovation projects in this competition. Applicants can request 100% funding for eligible project costs. Grant funding request must be between £70,000 and £120,000.
The programme opens on 7 February 2023. The deadline for applications is 15 March 2023.
Launch of £1m Competition to Stimulate Innovation in Occupational Health
Innovate UK has launched a competition to increase access for small businesses and the self-employed to occupational health services (OHS) in the UK. These groups are seen as being underserved by the current OHS provision and this competition’s support aims to allow OHS providers to better utilise the capacity they have to serve this new demand.
This is phase 1 of a potential 2-phase competition. Phase 1 focuses on technical feasibility studies. This means planned research or critical investigation to gain new knowledge and skills for developing new products, processes or services. A total of up to £1 million is allocated to phase 1. Feasibility study R&D contracts will be up to £100,000 for each project for up to eight months.
The deadline for applications is 15 March 2023.
IUK Launches Engineering Biology Collaborative Research and Development Competition
Through this competition, Innovate UK (IUK) will fund business-led research and development (R&D) that will lead to new Engineering Biology (EngBio) products, processes or services, and de-risk the adoption of new EngBio technologies that offer high market potential.
Up to £7 million has been allocated to fund industrial research projects and experimental development projects. Each project’s total costs must be between £100,000 and £500,000.
The deadline for applications is 29 March 2023.
Ofwat Launches £4m Water Discovery Challenge
Ofwat’s new Water Discovery Challenge is a £4 million competition for innovations that can help solve the biggest challenges facing the water sector; today and in the future. The aim is to directly support organisations with innovative propositions and facilitate their engagement with water companies.
Successful applicants can win up to £500,000. Up to 20 finalists with the most promising entries will be awarded up to £50,000 to develop their innovation, with a range of expert support and access to mentoring from water companies. A maximum of ten winners will be awarded up to £450,000 to further grow their innovation, receiving additional support to further accelerate their progress.
The deadline for applications is 5 April 2023.
New IUK Competition for UK-Germany Bilateral Collaborative R&D
The aim of this Innovate UK (IUK) competition is to support UK and German business-led collaboration in innovation. IUK will support UK businesses to collaborate successfully with German counterparts and build global growth prospects. Proposals must contribute to the development of commercial products, processes or technical services.
Projects must have an obvious advantage and added value as a result of the cooperation between the participants from the two countries. Examples of these could be increased innovation capability, commercial leads, access to R&D infrastructure or new fields of application.
The programme has a budget of up to £4 million from IUK, and up to €4 million from the German side. The grant funding request from UK partners must not exceed £400,000 in total. This can be used to fund feasibility projects, industrial research projects and experimental development projects.
The competition opens on Tuesday 7 February 2023. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 7 June 2023.
