Keep a look out for others as COVID-19 rates rise

top up your immunity

We are now seeing increasing COVID-19 rates and higher numbers of patients in hospital testing positive.

As winter approaches and more people meet indoors, Plymouth's Director of Public Health Ruth Harrell is advising everyone to keep their vaccinations up-to-date and to look out for those around us who are particularly vulnerable.

The autumn booster is now available to those at higher risk, including the over-65s, health and care workers and the immunosuppressed. This will widen over the next few weeks to include the over-50s, people in a clinical risk group and people who are pregnant.

Boosters can be booked through the National Booking Service and walk-in sessions are also available.

Dr Harrell says that while the vaccine helps prevent serious illness for most people, we need to look out for those who are immunosuppressed, for whom the vaccine doesn’t work as well.

She said: “These people still have to work, shop and carry out their daily activities, so it makes sense for all of us to take precautions.

“If you feel ill, for example with a temperature, then you should be at home. If you have milder symptoms, then it is up to you to make sensible decisions based on your own circumstances. Even if you have a cold or flu, you don’t want to pass this on to others – particularly more vulnerable people – so consider postponing activities until you are better and in the meantime wear a mask, catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue and practice good hand hygiene.”

Night buses launched to help people feel safe

Special late night buses will be running on Saturday nights until the end of the year as part of efforts to help people feel safer at night.

From Saturday 8 October the night buses will run three routes from Derrys Cross. Each route will run three buses a night, starting at midnight and then at 2am and 4am.

The buses, which will have on-board security and can be booked in advance, are possible thanks to funding from the Home Office’s Safer Streets 4 initiative, which focuses on tackling neighbourhood crime, anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls.
