Plymouth’s city centre could be made an investment zone by the Government, unlocking millions of pounds of investment for much-needed housing and business growth.
Plymouth is one of 38 authorities invited to work in partnership with the Government to create an investment zone to attract investment and unleash growth.
Details of what Plymouth’s investment zone could entail will be part of a business plan that will be submitted to Government but is expected to include interventions designed to speed up the delivery of proposed housing, retail and mixed use development. Interventions could include:
- Lower taxes – businesses in designated sites will benefit from time-limited tax benefits
- Accelerated development – with designated development sites to release more land for housing and commercial development and to support accelerated development. The planning process could also be radically streamlined. Development sites may be co-located with, or separate to, tax sites, depending on what makes most sense for the local economy.
- Wider support for local growth – for example, through greater control over local growth funding for areas

The Business Secretary has widened eligibility of Start Up Loans scheme to businesses trading for up to 3 years.
An £884 million loan scheme for new businesses is to be greatly expanded, delivering much needed finance to the UK’s array of innovative start-ups, the Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg has announced.
The Start Up Loans programme has provided more than 95,000 loans to start-ups across the UK since its inception in June 2012, offering an average of just over £9,000 in support.
With 33,000 new loans available, the programme’s eligibility will be expanded to support businesses trading for up to 3 years, up from 2 years. Businesses can apply immediately under the new criteria.
A new Energy Bill Relief Scheme will provide help with the cost of gas and electricity for all non-domestic customers, including all UK businesses and voluntary and public sector organisations. The scheme will apply to fixed contracts agreed on or after 1 April 2022, as well as to deemed, variable and flexible tariffs for energy usage from 1 October to 31 March.
Customers do not need to take action or apply to the scheme to access the support, which will automatically be applied to bills. After three months, there will be a review into the operation of the scheme to inform decisions on further support after March 2023.
The level of price reduction for each business will depend on their contract type and circumstances. A parallel scheme, based on the same criteria and offering comparable support but recognising the different market fundamentals, will be established in Northern Ireland.
Thank you to all the childcare providers and training organisations who attended the Careers Event at Central Park on Friday 23 September:
- Green Shoots Pre-school
- Freshlings Nursery UCSP
- Tops Day Nurseries
- Achievement Training
- City College
This was a fantastic opportunity for providers to raise the profile of childcare, meet important dignitaries and make good future links.
The feedback from the providers who attended was incredibly positive and we are pleased that all childcare providers who attended are wanting to be involved in future events.
The students enjoyed the activities provided and providers certainly changed student's views on a career in childcare leaving a number of students agreeing to volunteer and pursue apprenticeships. All of this would not have been possible without the passion and dedication of those providers who attended.
