New funding means the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) in Plymouth will operate for another 12 months, providing valuable innovation support to businesses in the county.
Based in Plymouth’s Oceansgate development, the MBTC has supported nearly 400 businesses since it was established in 2018.
Thanks to more than £735,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, backed by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the service will continue for another year, offering support to businesses developing cutting edge marine technologies in areas including marine autonomy and clean propulsion.
The MBTC is a partnership led by Plymouth City Council with the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter.
Ten years on from the development of the Britain’s Ocean City branding, Plymouth has seen a significant change and growth as a major city in the South West. Visitor numbers have increased over 25 per cent and there has been significant investment into the city’s business sector and wider communities.
In order to reflect these changes and to understand how Plymouth is currently perceived we are undertaking some research of the Britain's Ocean City brand and how perceptions have evolved over time across different city communities and stakeholders. This piece of work will inform us ‘where we are now’ and help to facilitate a further city wide conversation about how the brand evolves for the future.
We would like to invite you to be part of this process by completing a survey which will help us to understand how the "Plymouth, Britain's Ocean City" brand can best support the city's business community.
The National Marine Park Big Blue Splash is coming to the waterfront on 23 and 24 July, giving everyone in Plymouth the chance to enjoy and explore our amazing National Marine Park, thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Lots of free activities are on offer over the weekend, including a variety of water sports, and although many of the bookable activities have sold out very quickly there’s still plenty for people to turn up and enjoy on the day. Head to Tinside Lido to learn all about rock pools and meet their fascinating inhabitants with The Rockpool Project, have a go at riding an electric bike, join in a ‘beach explorers’ session with the Ocean Conversation Trust, practice using scuba equipment to see what it’s like breathing underwater or enjoy a taster session of stand up paddle boarding. In addition to this there will be face painters, entertainment from the Barbican Theatre, music and food stalls on shore!
Britain’s Ocean City’s Big Blue Splash is set to make bigger waves thanks to sponsorship from Brittany Ferries.
The company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is supporting the marine-focused weekend based on, in, under and around the UK’s first ‘Park in the Sea’ – the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park – on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July.
Brittany Ferries has been sailing into Plymouth since 2 January 1973. It was founded a year earlier by determined French farmers as a way to export Breton market garden produce directly into the UK. The business, which is still run by the Breton farming community as a social enterprise, grew and embraced passenger transport.
The company’s flagship vessel Pont-Aven, makes twice-weekly sailings from Plymouth to Santander in Spain, with both the Armorique and Pont-Aven operating regular sailings from Plymouth to Roscoff in France. Both ships operate projects above and below the water line to support marine health.
The University of Plymouth is one of the world’s top universities for marine research and teaching, with one of the largest portfolios of any institution in Europe.

All that is happening while they train the scientists and business leaders of the future through their range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with sustainability and social responsibility at their core.
The University’s world-class campus and facilities look out across Plymouth Sound and is home to around 3,000 marine staff, researchers and students. Spearheaded by their Marine Institute, their mission is to advance the sustainable use of the marine environment, which directly aligns with their role as the Education Partner of the Big Blue Splash.
The partnership between University of Plymouth, Marine Biological Association and Plymouth Marine Laboratory as part of Marine Research Plymouth, aims to cement the city's place as the UK's go-to location for marine and ocean science. In addition to that, the University is the key academic partner in the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.
