In just over four weeks’ time the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix will be returning to Plymouth - and the sun appears to be shining once again.
Hosting the all-action sailing contest on Plymouth Sound for the first time in 2021 unlocked a thriving partnership, and saw new collaboration and celebration across the city,
In 2021, Plymouth was able to work with SailGP on a number of shared initiatives – with some truly impressive outcomes. One being that we saw hundreds of children learn to sail for the very first time, the sea became accessible to them, they could feel first-hand what it meant to live in Britain’s Ocean City and it certainly began to unlock pride in place.
The city’s environmental commitments and status as Britain’s first National Marine Park was another initiative that seamlessly aligned with SailGP’s ethos.
Every host city, including Plymouth, signed the league’s Climate Action Charter and made a commitment to local impact projects that focus on clean energy impact and ocean conservation.
More of the same is following for 2022 and the excitement for this event can be felt threaded through every lead up event and conversation! The event also boosted our local economy by £7 million and there are numerous ways in which businesses can engage with the event and unlock tangible business benefits, all for free and some are listed in one handy document!
In Season 3, SailGP will continue to 'Race for the Future' and maintain its focus on sustainability; the league has set an ambitious target of a 55 per cent reduction of its carbon footprint - based on science - by 2025. Plus, SailGP are committed to being fully powered by nature by the same year, on shore and on the water.
As well as SailGP’s Racing for the Future programme, it also provides us with an incredible adrenalin-fuelled event; as some of the best athletes in the world compete against each other on identical F50s. The F50 catamarans are capable of speeds of nearly 50 knots (60mph), and they race right in front of our eyes within the natural amphitheatre of Plymouth Sound as we watch on in amazement.
If you joined us in 2021 you will know that the competition will be ferocious, and the tension will be high as SailGP’s ten incredibly competitive international teams battle it out for the championship trophy, along with the sport’s largest monetary prize … $1 million.
Plymouth Hoe provides a spectacular viewpoint, with fantastic views across Plymouth Sound and our new National Marine Park. There really is no better location to watch the racing from land.
If you have yet to purchase your tickets there is still time, visit SailGP and chose from Waterfront and On-Water fan experiences, plus the Bring Your Own Boat program.
We hope that whether you enjoy the business generated from the event, or you are able to attend the event itself, you enjoy SailGP 2022 and all the excitement that comes with it!
