New leader and Cabinet take office

Councillor Richard Bingley

Plymouth City Council has a new Conservative administration following the Annual Meeting at the Guildhall.

Councillor Richard Bingley was formally appointed as leader, alongside a new Cabinet.

The meeting follows changes in the political make-up of the Council after the local election on 5 May. There are now 29 Conservative members, 24 Labour, two Green and two independents.

Councillor Bingley said: "I am honoured to be the leader of the new Conservative administration in Plymouth. We have a dynamic new Cabinet in place and its members bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the table. We’ll be wasting no time in getting to grips with the most pressing issues facing our city and delivering priorities that matter to Plymouth residents.

“We’ll be focusing on providing access to decent education, higher-value jobs, good homes and access to first-class health and care.

“There are many important opportunities for Plymouth that need to be grasped and we intend wherever possible to embrace cross-party working for the good of our city."

Streets to celebrate Platinum Jubilee together

Jubilee road closures

Neighbours across Plymouth will be getting together for a right Royal knees-up to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

A total of 45 streets have applied for road closures to hold street parties at some point over the extended Bank Holiday weekend between Thursday 2 and Sunday 5 June.

Residents applying for permission had to confirm road closures will not have a significant impact on traffic. Party organisers have been asked to make people who live along the street aware of their plans and how long the road is to be closed for.

New short-term care centre opens

short term care centre

We've worked with Age UK Plymouth and the NHS Devon Clinical Commissioning Group to open a new short-term care centre that will help ensure patients don't have to stay in hospital longer than necessary.

The centre, which is being run by Livewell Southwest and Age UK Plymouth, has 24 en-suite bedrooms to provide a safe place for patients to recover after they have been in hospital.

The first patients have arrived at the centre and could stay for up to six weeks while receiving support from therapists, as well as the chance to enjoy social activities.

The aim is that people leave the centre when they are feeling much better and ready to live at home as independently as possible.
