The UK’s first e-marine hub of shore-side charging facilities for electric maritime vessels has been unveiled in Plymouth.
A series of high power DC electric charging stations has been switched on in prominent locations along the perimeter of the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.
This includes the world’s first 150kW charging facility at Mount Batten, the UK’s first 75kW site at Queen Anne’s Battery, and a 25kW installation at the Barbican landing stage.
Further installations are now being developed along the city’s waterfront, with additional sites also being identified in Devon and Cornwall with a view to providing electric charging facilities every 10 miles along the counties’ southern coastline.
The charging network has been created through the Marine e-Charging Living Lab (MeLL) initiative, a consortium led by the University of Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth City Council, Princess Yachts Limited and Aqua superPower
It directly responds to the UK government’s Clean Maritime Plan for maritime net zero, and its drive to increase the UK’s current percentage of clean electricity to 100% by 2035.
The tenth Plymouth History Festival begins this Saturday (7 May), celebrating the city’s unique heritage and showcasing the community work that takes place across the city. It runs until 27 May.
This year, the festival is taking inspiration from the ground breaking National Marine Park project, with a number of events that look at how Plymouth’s enduring connection with the water has shaped the identities of its people and communities.
The packed programme begins with a ‘Local History Bonanza Day’ at The Box on 7 May, when people can drop in to meet and chat to local history groups, enjoy a series of free talks, try their hand at quizzes, trails and more.
The History Festival is coordinated by The Box and delivered in partnership with a wide range of partner organisations, societies and individuals. Since launching in 2013 it’s engaged with thousands of people, offering a diverse insight into Plymouth’s rich historical past.
Hundreds of Plymouth schoolchildren will once again enjoy a spectacular day of sailing aboard heritage boats this May, giving them a chance to connect with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park in a unique way.
The ‘Spirit of Adventure’ programme was crowdfunded by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, with support from Plymouth City Council and Cattewater Harbour Commissioners in 2020, with the first wave of activity taking place last yearand the second part of the project running from the 2nd-6th May 2022.
During the week, 150 children enjoyed a day of hands-on sailing adventure with one of four sailing organisations: The Island Trust, The Bounty Project, Sailing Tectona and The Lynher Barge CIC. The organisations have seven traditional wooden sailing vessels between them, which undertook daily voyages in Plymouth Sound.
