Latest updates on keeping safe from COVID-19

It can be hard to keep up with all the latest guidance and measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.

To help, we’ve updated our COVID-19 website with new information, which includes regular updates on the position in Plymouth.

The number of cases in Plymouth remains low at present and we need to remain vigilant to keep it that way. The Government has also published new information summarising what you can do help stop the transmission of coronavirus. Following the actions will reduce your chance of catching COVID-19 or passing it on to others.

To keep cases down in Plymouth it is essential that anyone experiencing symptoms stays at home and arranges a test. Tests are free and are easy to book.

The Government has also announced that some ‘close contact’ beauty treatments, small wedding receptions and live indoor performances will be able to resume in England from Saturday. Bowling alleys, casinos and soft play centres will also be able to reopen after the easing of restrictions on them was postponed two weeks ago.

You can see what you can and can’t do on the GOV.UK website.

Face coverings

It is important that we continue to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces, where social distancing is difficult, and in particular those areas where it is now mandatory, including in shops and on public transport.

The Government has announced that repeat offenders who don’t wear face coverings in areas they are required by law to do so, could face bigger fines.

Looking for advice post-A-Levels or redundancy?

Skills Launchpad Plymouth

A-Level results day has been very different this year.

Even though exams and assessments were cancelled due to coronavirus, students still got their grades this week so they can move on to further study or employment.

For those who are worried about what to do next – and to support our Resurgam economic recovery programme – we’ve just launched a brand new skills hub with partners across the city.

‘Skills Launchpad Plymouth’ is a free virtual one-stop-shop, targeting support for young people through the Youth Hub as well as those who are facing redundancy through the Adult Hub.

The hub will be continuously developed as the go-to place for local skills support, providing orientation and up-to-date, real-time job market intelligence so that local people can stay informed about employment opportunities.

It will also offer impartial information, advice and guidance to match opportunities to pathways into education, training, apprenticeships, employment, work experience, volunteering and self-employment.

Commemorate VJ Day 75 wherever you are

VJ Day

This Saturday 15 August is #VJDay75, 75 years since Victory over Japan and the end of World War II.

There are a number of ways you can mark this significant anniversary, as we remember and recognise all those who served and sacrificed in the Far East.

You can take part in a national moment of remembrance wherever you are by joining people across the country in a two-minute silence at 11am on Saturday.

There’s also a commemorative church service outside the Minster Church of St Andrew starting at the same time (please respect social distancing guidelines).

And you can share your story or message of thanks on the Royal British Legion’s interactive map, to help ensure the contribution of those who served in the Far East is not forgotten.

When will Forder Valley Road (West) close?

Diversion route during closure of Forder Valley Road (West)

A date has been confirmed for the long-term closure of the western section of Forder Valley Road, for works on the new Forder Valley Link Road.

The stretch between Novorossiysk Road and Fort Austin Avenue will be closed in both directions from 10am on Sunday 13 September, for work to get under way on building the new junction, which will be larger and around five metres higher than the current one.

As we announced earlier in the year, the downhill side of the road will be closed for around 17 months but the uphill side will be reopened to cars between four and six months earlier, thanks to the efforts of the project team and contractors.

A diversion will be in place via Manadon Roundabout, Tavistock Road and Crownhill Road.
