Chelson Meadow open for essential visits
Chelson Meadow recycling centre has been very busy since re-opening last week
Thanks to everyone for their patience and for following our advice on avoiding unnecessary trips and planning ahead.
Government advice is that you should only visit recycling centres if you cannot store your waste without it risking injury or harm to health. Please don't visit unless you really have to.
The only things we're currently accepting are: • garden waste (not soil or rubble) • electrical items • bagged household waste you would normally put in your brown bin.
We can only allow a limited number of cars in and there is a queuing system and diversion in place so we're warning people to expect long waiting times. Our staff are not able to help with unloading.
The centre is open every day from 8am to 6pm and the more that people stagger their journeys the easier it is for us to manage demand. If you do visit please check all the restrictions before you set out.
It's another bank holiday weekend and we know how tempting it is to get that gardening, clear-out or DIY done.
Please postpone projects if you don't have anywhere to store your extra waste. Don't put it outside – this is fly-tipping (a criminal offence) and can obstruct access for the emergency services and those providing care.
Don't put it in your brown or green bin either as this makes bins very heavy for crews to move, is potentially dangerous and can cause problems when the waste is processed.
You may consider using a local business to dispose of your waste for a charge – but check you use a registered carrier as you will be responsible if it ends up fly-tipped.
Finally, please don’t burn your waste. It’s bad for the environment, a nuisance to others and can also put unnecessary added pressure on the fire service.

Lots of people have been asking when garden waste collections will start up again.
At the moment our focus remains on keeping the city's essential brown and green bin rounds running with far fewer drivers and loaders.
Garden waste collection isn't a statutory service and the Government has made it clear that emptying bins and re-opening recycling centres are higher priorities.
As soon as we are able to resume garden waste collections we will let everyone know.
In the meantime our advice is to store your garden waste and keep it dry or consider home composting.

Keep helping to protect yourselves and our waste crews by:
- Double-bagging used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths and keeping bags separate from other waste, if anyone in your household shows symptoms.
- Waiting 72 hours before putting any double-bagged waste in the bin
- Cleaning bin handles and washing your hands after putting bins out and bringing them in
See the Government advice on the safe disposal of waste.

Don't forget bin collections will be a day later next week following the late May bank holiday.
If you've forgotten whether it's a brown or green bin week for you or you're not sure of your collection day you can check here.
