Bins and recycling bulletin

Bin collections over Easter

Bin collection

We are continuing to run our refuse collections but please remember they will be one day later than usual next week (week of 13 April), following the Easter break.

So, if your normal collection day is Monday your collection will be on Tuesday, and so on. Collections will return to their usual days the following week.

See our COVID-19 web page for the latest updates on all our waste services. Check your collection day here.

Help reduce the spread of COVID-19

virus

Please help to protect yourselves and our crews by:

  • Double-bagging used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths and keeping bags separate from other waste, if anyone in your household shows symptoms.
  • Waiting 72 hours before putting any double-bagged waste in the bin
  • Cleaning bin handles and washing your hands after putting bins out and bringing them in

See the latest Government advice on the safe disposal of waste during COVID-19.

Garden and bulky waste

Chelson Meadow recycling centre

So that we can prioritise bin collections with limited staff we’ve had to suspend a number of non-critical services, including garden and bulky waste collections. Our household waste recycling centres are also closed.

We know many people will want to do gardening and home improvements while they are at home, especially over Easter, but please postpone these projects unless you have somewhere to store the waste.

Alternatively you could consider home composting – there are lots of helpful tips on the Recycle Now and Royal Horticultural Society websites.

Don’t bin, dump or burn!

Please hold on to any large items such as furniture, wood and metals until our recycling centres re-open.

Do not put bulky, DIY or garden waste or electrical items in any of your bins. This makes them very heavy for our crews to move, is potentially dangerous and causes problems when the waste is being processed.

Do not put out these things out in the street or in back lanes either – this is classed as fly-tipping (a criminal offence). It can also obstruct access for the emergency services and those providing care and medical support.

Finally…please don’t burn your waste. It’s bad for the environment and a nuisance to others in the community who want to get some fresh air. Out-of-control bonfires also put unnecessary added pressure on fire service resources.

Thank you to our crews

Thank-you messages for bin crews

Some lovely messages and pictures have been left out for our crews as they make their rounds.

They genuinely appreciate the support as they continue to work hard, with fewer staff and in difficult circumstances, to provide this important service.

All our crews have strict procedures to follow to keep themselves and others as safe as possible during collections. Thank you for showing so much love to our frontline workers.
