empty Plymouth streets

Let's keep Plymouth's streets empty

A huge thank you to everyone who has been following the government guidance to stay in and avoiding unnecessary travel.

Our streets have been empty and as we approach the bank holiday weekend, it is vital that we continue to observe the instructions to stay at home and follow social distancing.

It is tough, particularly at a time when families would normally be together, but staying at home really does save lives.

Our parks are open this weekend for exercise but it is essential that everyone maintains safe distancing to ensure they can continue to remain open.

Plymouth has also joined the united call across the South West region for visitors and second home owners to stay away this bank holiday weekend.

More volunteers join Good Neighbours Scheme

Good neighbours3

We are now deploying volunteers from our Good Neighbours Scheme to organisations across Plymouth.

We’ve had more than 500 people, each with different skills and talents, join the ranks to help others through the coronavirus crisis, with more and more coming in each day.

We’ve also received a number of calls from businesses who have offered us staff, premises, vehicles and all sorts of other assets.

We’re keen to help voluntary and community groups already out there helping. Do you need our support? Can we help you with our volunteer base? If so, please get in touch.

Caring for Plymouth's most vulnerable residents

Caring for Plymouth

Our Caring for Plymouth teams are continuing to help shield the city’s most vulnerable residents who need to remain at home due to coronavirus.

The teams have received nearly 1,000 calls from people needing help and have supported many of our partners to deliver food, medicine and other support direct.

The call centre will stay open over this weekend so if you, or anyone you know, is vulnerable, self-isolating and has no local support network, don’t be afraid to get in touch on 01752 668000.

Alternatively you can also find out about the support each of our Caring for Plymouth partners can give online.

Visit the Plymouth Online Directory for more information.

£22 million in grants approved for city firms

We’ve now authorised more than £22 million in grants for Plymouth businesses after contacting firms eligible for the new Small Business Grant Fund and the Retail Hospitality and Leisure Fund.

The funds offer grants of up to £25,000 to help businesses through the coronavirus pandemic. We are also running a dedicated helpline to support businesses in applying for grants.

You can find more details, including eligibility criteria, on the Invest in Plymouth website.

Remember your bank holiday bin day

bin crew

Our crews are continuing to collect your domestic waste but remember that due to the Easter bank holidays your collections will be a day later than usual during the week of 13 April.

Please put your bin out a day later than you normally do next week. If your normal collection day is a Monday your collection will be a Tuesday and so on.

We are also asking all households to take a few simple actions to protect both themselves and our refuse crews.

Help for those at risk of domestic violence

Help is on hand for anyone at risk of domestic abuse during the current Coronavirus restrictions.

With more families self-isolating at home during an already tense period, there's been a national increase in referrals for safe accommodation space.

The Plymouth Domestic Abuse Service (PDAS) has introduced a 24-hour helpline: 0800 458 2558 or you can visit www.victimcaredevonandcornwall.org.uk for support.

We're fighting for our fishing industry

fishing

We are fighting for the future of Plymouth's fishing industry by supporting its successful Call 4 Fish initiative and calling for the Government to do more to help the sector.

Fishing is a key to the Plymouth economy where it supports over 2,000 jobs.

We are supporting the creation of Call 4 Fish, which connects the public and organisations directly with suppliers who are able to deliver fish direct to doorsteps, with an injection of £10,000 of funding to get it up and running. Read more.

COVID-19 testing site opens

We've provided a site for the NHS to open a drive-through COVID-19 testing centre in Plymouth.

The site at the Plymouth Medical and Technology Park is now open for health and care staff. The aim is to enable key personnel back to get back work as soon as possible, to ease pressure on their colleagues.

The centre is not open to the public. All NHS staff tests must be pre-booked, with no drop-ins accepted. Read more.
