Brexit Preparation - Register for EORI Number

EORI

All businesses that import or export goods to or from the UK need to register for an Economic Operator Registration Identification (EORI) number if there is a no deal Brexit. If you do not get one, you may have increased costs and delays.

Plymouth Set to Become One of the UK's First Cities of Learning

Plymouth

An exciting project to turn Plymouth into a digital learning campus gets underway later this year. The City Council has worked with the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) on a successful bid to the Royal Society for Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA) to become one of the first UK ‘Cities of Learning’. The project will bring together local businesses, organisations, networks and communities across Plymouth to develop learning opportunities for use on a digital platform. Automation Prototypes: Invitation to Apply

We are looking to invest in prototypes that use creative technologies to deliver original processes, experiences, products, services or platforms within the field of automation. We are looking to fund ideas that are brave and distinctive, that open up the field of automation to new voices and challenge the status quo within the field. We anticipate awarding grants of between £10k and £40k. Contract to Be Awarded for Second Phase of Oceansgate

Oceansgate, the new home of marine enterprise in Plymouth and a key player in the city’s role as a maritime powerhouse, is taking another step forward with work on Phase 2 of the development starting shortly. The contract for the construction of Oceansgate’s second phase is set to be awarded to Kier, following a delegated decision being signed off today by Plymouth City Council. Oceansgate has transformed disused MOD land in South Yard, Devonport, into a marine Enterprise Zone and thriving business development. Partners Launch New Plastics Code of Conduct

Plastic code of conduct

A new code of conduct to help businesses, community organisations and individuals cut down on single use plastics has been launched by partners in Plymouth. The Plan for Plastics Code of Conduct was launched jointly by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce and Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s City Conversations event. It follows the news last month that Plymouth is the largest UK city to be awarded Plastic Free City status by Surfers Against Sewage. To find out more click here


25th Anniversary Ceremony - Kawasaki Precision Machinery UK (KPM UK)

Welcomes International Guests to Mark 25 years since its acquisition of the Plymouth manufacturing site. The vast Ernesettle manufacturing plant situated on the banks of the River Tamar, employs nearly 300 staff and was proud to welcome Senior Executives from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.Japan (KHI) and also local business partners. In 1994 KPM UK was formed as a stand-alone subsidiary of the Kawasaki Precision Machinery Group and it is its only manufacturing base in Europe.  Guests were then invited to attend Elliot Terrace for the afternoon, hosted by Plymouth City Council.  A welcome speech and presentation on Plymouth was given by Councillor Tudor Evans OBE, followed by a very insightful presentation from Tracey Lee (Chief Executive PCC) about manufacturing in Plymouth and KPM UK’s significant contribution to it, for example that the company contributed £24.8m GVA in 2018 and represents 8% of Plymouth’s entire export. To find out more click here


New Chief Executive to Lead Plymouth's Art and Culture Growth

Hannah Harris has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of Plymouth Culture, Plymouth’s Arts and Culture Development Agency. Hannah joins Plymouth Culture from her role as Director of Development at Plymouth College of Art. In this role she initiated numerous partnership projects, both nationally and internationally, focusing on arts education, talent development and business start-ups within the creative industries. Hannah has a background in business development and cultural management and has worked in the community, public and private sectors. To find out more click here


Grassroots Music Venues across Plymouth Unite to Create Fightback Plymouth

We are proud to be working with Music Venue Trust to support and develop live music in Plymouth and are excited to announce more details about Fightback Plymouth.
Fightback Plymouth is a two-week celebration of Plymouth’s vital grassroots music venues that will take place 13 to 28 September. The campaign will encourage audiences to visit their local music venues and promote Plymouth’s emerging and existing musical talent, with live music every day throughout the festival at a whole range of venues right across the city. To find out more click here


UK Seafood Innovations Fund

We are looking for local businesses that could benefit from the call for applications from the UK Seafood Innovations Fund. The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is an Executive Agency of Defra. Cefas are administering the Seafood Innovation Fund (SIF) on behalf of Defra. Cefas will run several calls totalling £10M throughout the 3-year programme (ending March 2022).
The first call of £4M opens on Friday 19th July and closes on Thursday 12th September. There are two options for applications, either smaller feasibility studies of up to £50k, or larger full R&D projects up to £250k. Feasibility studies are designed to test new ideas and can be up to 3 months. Full R&D projects are for more developed ideas that can be delivered in up to 18 months. Feasibility studies will be expected to apply for full R&D funding following a successful outcome in the feasibility stage. To find out more and to apply click here


Plymouth’s Marine Tech Expo Returning in 2020

Plymouth’s Marine Tech Expo will return to the city from 30 June to 3 July 2020, as part of the Mayflower 400 programme of events. This four day expo offers a platform to showcase, network and collaborate with the world class marine technology sector that exists in the South West. The event will also offer the opportunity for attendees to view in- and on-water live demonstrations, both at the expo and out in Plymouth Sound, coordinated by the Future Autonomous at Sea Technologies (FAST) Cluster. To find out more click here

In response to concerns about ‘rogue traders’ and in order to provide support for consumers and good businesses, Plymouth City Council Trading Standards started running Buy with Confidence (BWC) in the City in 2010.   The national scheme is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year.  The scheme provides consumers with a list of local businesses which have given their commitment to trading fairly.
