International Day of Older Persons
This Tuesday 1 October was International Day of Older Persons, and members of our Housing and Estates teams marked the occasion by hosting events for residents at two of our sheltered schemes, Chartwell House and Marriott House in Oadby.
The team brought along a buffet lunch and spent the afternoon socialising and allowing the council officers and residents to get to know each other better.
A further event was held at William Peardon Court in Wigston on Friday 4 October, where residents enjoyed an evening of entertainment with a live singer.
William Peardon Coffee Mornings
Residents at William Peardon Court set up the coffee mornings to help connect with neighbours after Covid. Residents gather every Wednesday morning, have a coffee and a chat and raise money to purchase equipment for the good of the community. Residents have purchased a garden set which has been put to good use on the warmer days, and have recently started up a bingo group to further enhance the lives in the group.
Visitors that had parents previously residing at William Peardon still come to the weekly sessions as they had made such meaningful connections with other residents.
Chartwell House Gardening Club
This year, residents at Chartwell House began to grow some of their own vegetables. The crop so far this year has been tomatoes, corn, radish, beetroots, rhubarb and cabbages which unfortunately the slugs are also enjoying! Residents have planted potatoes to harvest for Christmas dinner and all enjoy the sense community this brings.
In addition to this, a planter at the front of the building is maintained by residents bringing a splash of colour to Chartwell House.
