Funding boost for safer streets |
|
PCC, Rupert Matthews, with Mark Smith from the Community Safety Partnership
The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Rupert Matthews has secured almost £1m of extra Home Office funding to get tough on ASB, Neighbourhood Crime and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).
In August the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland PCC submitted three detailed proposals to the Home Office’s Safer Streets 5 Fund. Now the go-ahead has been granted, he will work with Leicestershire police and local authority partners to tackle priority areas of public concern.
Securing a total grant of nearly £961k, the funding will be invested in a raft of safety schemes to protect local people from the crimes that cause them most concern and impact how safe they feel.
In Oadby & Wigston the planned projects include:
- Property marking to tackle neighbourhood crime
- Improved security
- Additional CCTV and improved lighting

Substance use and domestic abuse - keeping safe over the festive period |
|
We know that Christmas can be a difficult time for those with substance use issues, and we also know that the risk of domestic abuse increases with substance use.
The strain put on relationships over the Christmas period can also put domestic abuse victims at greater risk. You may have plans that the abuser is not happy with, you may be going on a work night out that they don’t want you to attend, or inviting family members to the home that they don’t like.
If you are a victim of domestic abuse here are some helpful tips to keep yourself safe over the Christmas period:
- Phone 999 in an emergency, and press 55 if you are unable to speak
- Speak to a trusted friend or neighbour. Arrange a safety plan such as putting an unusual object on the window sill that they are able to see if you need help
- Send a text or make a phone call with a ‘CODE WORD’ if you need help
- If you are on a night out and feel unsafe, go to the bar staff and ‘Ask For Angela’
- Install the Hollie Guard App on your phone. This app is a personal alarm, deterrent, evidence catcher and more.

Find your local Keep Safe Place this winter |
|
Stay safe this winter and visit your nearest Keep Safe Place if you're feeling vulnerable whilst you're out and about.
Keep Safe Places will give you somewhere safe to go if you're feeling upset, scared or need help, and can call or help you call someone (eg a friend, carer, relative, police or emergency services)
If you have a Keep Safe Card you should show this to the staff.

Positive Futures with the Leicester Riders |
|
Our Anti-Social Behaviour officer (C) with Ricky (L) and Myalls (R) from the Leicester Riders Foundation
Earlier this year the Community Safety Partnership and council worked in partnership with the Leicester Riders Foundation and Leicestershire Police to deliver the Positive Futures basketball programme, providing diversionary activity for those aged 8-17 at risk of becoming involved in crime or violence.
The programme, based at Blaby Road Park in South Wigston, was initially scheduled to run for six weeks over the summer holidays, but was extended until the October half-term due to its success and popularity with participants.
Some sessions saw upwards of 20 attendees from a diverse range of backgrounds, and provided the young people with an opportunity to develop not only basketball skills, but also promote teamwork, build confidence and create trust between the young people, the police and the council.
Watch this space for the programme to return in the new year!
