Being a transport manager

Being a transport manager

Transport managers need to have good repute and be professionally competent. The Senior Traffic Commissioner has issued guidance on what this means.

TM responsibilities

Vehicle operators can be very different from one business to another. For transport managers, the duties they carry out often depend on the type of operator they're working for.

That's why the Senior Traffic Commissioner has issued guidance on the role, which explains the core activities every transport manager is expected to undertake.

The guidance provides a job description for transport managers, including what needs to be done with drivers and vehicles (see pages 14-16).

Plus, there's a reminder (on page 16) for transport managers to:

  • keep their knowledge and skills up to date
  • have an impact on the organisation they're working for
  • influence decision making to ensure compliance
