 "Something had to change”: Domestic abuser reflects on their journey to behaviour change
James, a man in his 30s, has shared his experience of using abusive behaviour as part of Essex Police’s Reflect campaign. He described how controlling and sometimes violent behaviour affected several relationships over two decades, and how he often justified his actions.
After being arrested and imprisoned, he began working with Cranstoun, a behaviour‑change provider, and says the programme has made a significant difference.
James explained that recognising the impact on his children was a turning point and encouraged others to seek support if they recognise similar behaviours.
A prolific shoplifter has been jailed after repeatedly stealing from a Brentwood BP garage despite being banned from the store.
The 46-year-old man, was caught on CCTV several times last summer and was finally arrested by a plain‑clothes officer during a covert operation.
He admitted multiple shop thefts and breaches of his Criminal Behaviour Order and has been sentenced to two‑and‑a‑half years in prison.
A dangerous offender has been jailed after DNA evidence linked him to the sexual assault of a 13‑year‑old girl.

Kelvedon: Man charged after fatal A12 collision
A man has been charged after a crash on the A12 near Kelvedon in October 2024 which sadly killed 58‑year‑old Norman Case.
Emergency services attended but Mr Case, who was driving a grey VW Polo, died at the scene. Three cars were involved. The driver of a black Mercedes was arrested at the time.
Following further investigation, a 22‑year‑old man from High Wycombe has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He has appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court and will next appear at Chelmsford Crown Court in March.
A man has been jailed after officers stopped a stolen Volvo that was being driven dangerously through Essex.
The car had been taken from London and was seen speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road before entering the county.
Officers acted quickly to prevent danger to the public and used a stinger on the A127 and boxed the car in to bring it to a safe stop.
The 32-year-old driver, was arrested and later jailed for four months, disqualified from driving for 12 months, and given six penalty points.
A driver has been sentenced after refusing to provide a specimen when officers found him unresponsive in a car at a Chelmsford supermarket. The 49-year-old man, from Sible Hedingham, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving but refused to give a sample.
He received a 50‑month driving ban, a suspended 12‑week sentence, more than £700 in fines, and supervision requirements.
Refusing a specimen is an offence and prevents us from keeping our roads safe.
Three men were arrested after officers stopped a large cannabis grow from being set up in an industrial unit in Colchester. Our officers found lighting and heating equipment ready to use, along with building work underway.
The men were arrested on suspicion of stealing electricity and supplying drugs, and two were also wanted by immigration authorities.
Stopping these setups helps keep people safe because illegal grows often use dangerous electrics and are linked to wider criminal activity.
