Security Bike Marking Event at Riverside Ice and Leisure
This week, the Chelmsford Neighbourhood Policing Team, in partnership with the Chelmsford Community Safety Partnership and Active Citizen (Volunteer), hosted a successful bike marking event at Riverside Ice and Leisure.
This initiative aimed to help residents protect their bikes from theft by offering free security marking and crime prevention advice. Officers engaged with cyclists of all ages, raising awareness about bike safety and the importance of registering bikes with the national database.
- Over 40 bikes were marked
- Dozens of residents engaged
- Strong community support
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event. Together we’re making Chelmsford safer!
“Essex Police and the court dealt with my case with professionalism and care, ensuring every detail was heard and fully presented to the jury. “From the very beginning, I felt my experience was taken seriously and the process was handled with the gravity it deserved.”
Those are the words of a survivor of non-recent sexual offending, after she came forward to report the abuse she suffered when she was a child.
The woman, who is entitled to life-long anonymity, says reaching the conclusion of her case has brought her “a sense of justice and recognition”.
She said:
“It has shown me that these crimes are treated with the seriousness they deserve. It reminds me that speaking out does matter.”
The good work of officers in surrounding a stolen car at a service station led to the recovery of £50,000 of cocaine and the tracing of a wholesale drug supplier.
Two offenders engaged in the large-scale supply of cocaine now face a combined 10 years in prison.
The case began back in May 2023, with officers on patrol spotting a vehicle with cloned number plates travelling along the A12.
Several units surrounded the vehicle when it stopped in a service station at Feering, detaining the driver, 50-year-old Lee Ansell.
Two 1kg blocks of cocaine, with an estimated value of between £48,000 and £60,000, were recovered from the boot.
The car itself was seized, having found to have been stolen from an address in Bedfordshire.

 Crime prevention advice
You may have invested a great deal of time, energy and money in your business premises, but burglars make it their business to break in. Follow our advice below to make the property more secure, deterring them from targeting your premises.
Protect your business from the outside in
1. A well-maintained exterior free of rubbish and graffiti will reduce the likelihood of your business being targeted by criminals. So try to remove any graffiti. If any appears on a nearby wall or structure, call the local council who will send their specialist team.
2. Identify areas that may be vulnerable to forced entry and have them made more secure.
3. Make sure any service doors are locked and secure when not in use.
4. Make sure you have a monitored alarm and that it’s fully operational. For advice and approved suppliers of alarms and CCTV, visit the National Security Inspectorate and the Security Systems Alarms Inspection Board.
5. Make sure your CCTV is operational, provides facial recognition as well as good quality images and covers any vulnerable areas. 24-hour digital CCTV is also highly recommended. You'll find useful advice on buying surveillance equipment, from the Surveillance Camera Commissioner.
6. Make sure that wheelie bins are stored away as these can be climbed on to gain access to the building, especially via the first floor.
7. Make sure there is sufficient lighting around the premises, especially loading areas.
Be fraud smart
Find out the difference between fraud, bribery and corruption, so you can report them to the right place.
Fraud
Fraud is when someone tricks or scams you out of money or something else valuable.
Personal fraud might be someone pretending to be your bank to trick you into transferring money into their account.
Business fraud could be someone lying in company accounts to steal from people who have loaned them money.
Fraud often happens online, like ticketing scams or using a fake dating profile to con money from you.
Bribery
Bribery is giving or offering a person something to persuade them to act dishonestly or break the law for you. It is illegal to offer, give or accept a bribe.
For example, a company paying an official to award them government contracts would be bribery.
A bribe doesn't have to be money. It could be something else, like offering a promotion at work in return for a favour. Or it could be a high-value gift, like tickets to a sporting event.
Businesses have a legal duty to prevent bribery within the company.
Corruption
Corruption is when someone abuses a position of power to get money or something else valuable.
For example, a group of companies secretly agreeing to set artificially high prices would be a form of corruption called price fixing. Or an employee selling company secrets to a competitor is corruption.
Match-fixing in sport is another form of corruption where a coach or player influences the outcome of a match for financial reward.
Disagreements between people about wills, visitation rights, property boundaries, landlords and tenants are not fraud, bribery or corruption.
Also, disputes over mis-sold or faulty items or bad service are not fraud, bribery or corruption.
