Man charged in connection with dog remain finds
We're continuing our investigation after the discovery of 37 dead dogs at a property in Crays Hill on 13 May.
The operation, conducted with the RSPCA and Basildon Council, also found around 20 live dogs in need of veterinary care. Two men were arrested on suspicion of fraud and animal cruelty. One was released on bail, while 25-year-old Ovaeed Rahman of Hope Road, Billericay, was charged with multiple offences including animal cruelty and fraud. He appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on 15 May and was remanded in custody pending a June hearing.
A public portal has been set up for evidence submissions, though police urge against submitting rumours or third-party reports to avoid hindering the investigation.
Two arrests over dog incident
A woman in her 30s reported being bitten in Highwood Lane at 2.50pm on 13 May and sustained an injury to her arm.
The dog was with another dog and we have been working to locate them and their owner since the incident.
On Saturday 17 May, a 61 year-old man and a 59 year-old woman, both from Loughton, were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a dog dangerously out of control.
They have both been released on bail.
The dogs have since been seized since the incident took place.
Rural policing team officers reunite owners with £55k of stolen machinery
Essex Police’s Rural Engagement Team recently reunited GAP Group with a stolen digger and dumper truck, recovered from a truck attempting to leave the UK via Harwich International Port.
The equipment, taken from a site in Doncaster, was part of over £100,000 worth of stolen construction machinery recovered during a port operation in collaboration with the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team and the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service. During the operation, officers inspected 210 HGVs. A 29-year-old Polish man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and remains on bail.
In the year leading up to April 2025, the team recovered 68 stolen vehicles, including 34 pieces of agricultural and construction machinery.
Fatal collision
We were called to reports of a collision near to the Esso service station on Start Hill at 2.30am on Sunday 18 May where a silver Renault Megane had left the road.
Emergency services, including the air ambulance, attended the scene but despite everyone’s best efforts, sadly, the man, who we believe is a Polish national British citizen in his 60s, died a short time later.
The road was closed while we responded to the incident but re-opened shortly before 8am.
Essex Police Chief Constable BJ Harrington
Inspection highlights improvement in investigating crime and response to the public
“Crime and anti-social behaviour continues to fall in Essex and we are pleased that HMICFRS have recognised how we have improved in ‘responding to the public ‘and ‘investigating crime’ since our last inspection.”
That’s from our Chief Constable following the release of His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) most recent report published on Wednesday 14 May.
Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington said:
“Ensuring that we look after our people so they can serve the people of Essex is essential. Equally ensuring the quality of the crime data to measure success and target resources is fundamental to reducing crime. So being assessed as ‘good’ in these two areas shows we are getting the foundations right.
“Essex Police remains unfairly funded in comparison with other forces and parts of the country so to be assessed as ‘adequate’ across the complex range of services we deliver is recognition of the immense work by our officers, staff and volunteers along with the strong partnerships we have across Essex. There are areas identified where we need to improve and, in every area, we want to get better. We are already working on these and this is acknowledged in the report.“
Appeal to trace girls in connection with investigation
We are trying to identify two girls who may be able to help our investigation after a man was charged with outraging public decency in Pitsea.
It was reported a man had exposed himself in Caister Drive shortly before 8.30pm on Monday 28 April.
Tyrone Griffith, 57, of Caister Drive, Pitsea, was arrested has since been charged with outraging public decency.
He appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on 2 May and is next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on 30 May.
As part of our investigation we want to speak to two girls who we want to speak to as witnesses.
They are both described as white, 13 or 14 years-old, of medium build, with dark brown or black hair, and wearing dark-coloured clothing.
Five years in prison for credit card fraud
Anita Mirmohammadi, 31, was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison for stealing nearly £200,000 from her employer in Brentwood, where she worked in the finance team.
Between 2018 and 2022, she used a company credit card and fraudulent invoices to fund a lavish lifestyle, including luxury purchases from Harrods and Selfridges, and holidays to Mexico, Turkey, and Dubai.
Her fraud was uncovered during routine financial checks, and she was arrested at Gatwick Airport in May 2022. Found guilty after a trial in March 2025, she now faces a confiscation hearing in November under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Second charge over burglary
Detectives have secured charges against a second man in connection with a burglary at a home in Witham.
An address in Pippin Croft was broken into at around 5.35pm on 10 April and a safe was stolen.

Man jailed following 'road rage' incident
Anthony Larwood, 42, from Chelmsford, was jailed for four and a half years with an additional three years on licence after a violent road rage incident in Basildon.
On 17 February, following a driving dispute, Larwood attacked another man with a hammer, causing serious head injuries. He had initially damaged the victim’s car and later returned to strike him while the victim was on the phone to police.
Larwood admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon. He also received a concurrent nine-month sentence for the weapon charge and was ordered to pay compensation.
A woman arrested in connection remains on bail.
Burglary arrest
We received reports of thefts at properties in West Hanningfield and Little Baddow on 3 May and 11 May respectively.
Officers investigated and identified a vehicle they believed was linked to these thefts, which was stopped by armed officers in Little Baddow on Thursday 15 May.
Inside the vehicle were a number of items believed to be stolen, and the 52-year-old driver from Chelmsford was arrested on suspicion of two counts of theft.
