Off duty police officer stops drink driver
A man has been charged with drink driving after an off-duty police officer followed a car on Saturday 11 January to a shop in #Bocking, because they had concerns about a driver’s behaviour. Having watched the driver, the off-duty officer stopped them getting into a car and called police. Officers arrived and carried out a roadside breath test on the driver, which indicated they were over the legal alcohol limit to drive. A 53-year-old man from Braintree was arrested and later charged with drink driving. He is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court next month. If you believe someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, call 999. Your actions could save lives.
Can you help ?
Detectives investigating a fatal collision in Witham are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage. We were called at around 10am on Sunday 12 January following reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian at Powers Hall Road. Emergency services attended after a Mitsubishi Shogun came to rest on its side. The driver was unharmed. Sadly, the female pedestrian, aged in her 40s, died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics. The road was closed whilst we carried out an investigation at the scene and to allow for recovery of the car. The road was reopened shortly before 3pm. The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was released under investigation whilst we continue with our enquiries. If you have any information, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us. Please quote incident 283 of 12 January when providing any information to make sure it gets to the right person as quickly as possible.
Our Special Constables continue to keep us safe
The Essex Police Community Special Constable teams were on patrol in their dedicated towns this week to provide visibility, reassurance and crime deterrent. Special Constables Mikey Mihalyfi & Matt Baker were in Halstead carrying out foot patrol in the town, visiting local businesses on the High Street and parks on King's Road, including the Public Gardens. During their vehicle patrols they visited the Bluebridge industrial estate and headed out to neighbouring rural areas.
In Witham, Community Special Sergeant Simon Jesse and Special Constable Claire Eaketts began with vehicle patrols around the town, Lawrence Avenue, Dengie Close & Gershwin Boulevard before commencing foot patrol in the town centre. During their high visibility patrol they held the fortnightly Community Beat Surgery outside The Witham Hub, engaging with local residents and assisted with ongoing investigations before providing reassurance to the staff at Witham library.
Essex Police Community Special Constables are volunteers who work alongside Parish or Town Councils to dedicate their volunteer role to a specific area. If you are interested in finding out more about this role then please click below

 Crime prevention advice
Winter running can be refreshing, but it's important to stay safe.
Wear bright, reflective clothing so you are visible to others, especially in low light conditions.
Be fraud smart
Scammers are experts in what they do, help stop them by learning about the different tactics they use. Friends Against Scams is a quick online learning programme that can help you understand the different types of scams there are, how to spot them and how to support anyone you know who may have been a victim.
I want to dispose of some kitchen knives can you tell me how to do this safely?
You can put the knives in your bin. It is advisable to ensure that they are packaged securely so as not to cause injury to any persons.
With the introduction of wheelie bins everything is done by machine so that likelihood of injury has been vastly reduced. However it is still advisable to package the knives securely just in case.
All metal knives can be taken to your local waste disposal site where there will be a skip for scrap metal.
