Retired Police Dogs Cain and Ollie
Retired Police Dogs thanked for their service
Three retried police dogs have been acknowledged for their loyal service to Essex Police and our communities.
The trio of German Shepherds, who had a combined 10 years of service, were presented with the Paul Nicholls Service Medal at an event held at Essex Police HQ.
The medal is named after its founder, Paul Nicholls QPM. Paul, a retired Essex Police dog handler, worked with the Essex Retired Police Dogs Fund, to come up with a way of acknowledging the loyal service of our police dogs.
The medal is presented to all dogs who have come to the end of their Essex Police service - whether that's through retirement, or more sadly, injury or death.
The mum of a man who was fatally stabbed in Lakeside shopping centre has sent to a message to anyone thinking of carrying a knife.
In it, Lauretta Ugwa warns of the devastation which knife crime causes and its far-reaching consequences for the families of victims – and perpetrators’.
She has bravely decided to speak out as part of a national week of action on knife crime, named Sceptre week.
Her son, 29-year-old Michael Ugwa, was in the Lakeside food court at 4.30pm on 28 April 2022 when a chance meeting led to him being stabbed by Muhammad Khan.
We want to keep knives and blades out of the wrong hands, so we ask stores selling them to sign up to our Responsible Retailer scheme.
Retail staff pledge to store and display them safely and securely and to operate a strict ‘Challenge 25’ age verification policy.
Our Business Crime Team visit retailers across Essex to provide robust staff training and want to hear from more shops willing to sign up.
Last Sunday our officers took part on the Remembrance Parade at Southend Cenotaph. Each year we are honoured to provide a presence and ensure the event goes smoothly, and we can ensure that those that made the ultimate sacrifice are remembered respectfully. This year we also conducted a Project Servator deployment. Project Servator is a policing tactic used to disrupt a range of criminal activity up to and including terrorism. Deployments are part of our regular policing of Southend and take place frequently in and around the city centre to keep visitors and residents safe. We always encourage people to be vigilant and to assist us by being our eyes and ears on the street. To find out more about Project Servator

 Keep your car safe
Cars with keyless entry can unlock automatically when the key is nearby, even if it’s in your pocket or bag.
Thieves can capture the signal from your key, even from inside your home, to unlock and steal your car.
To protect your keyless entry car, consider investing in a signal-blocking pouch, like a Faraday Pouch.
Stay vigilant and keep your car safe.
Be fraud smart
Invoice fraud happens when criminals pose as a company or organisation that you trust. Letting you know they have updated bank details and may send a fake invoice.
Always question changes in payment and get them verified before sending any money.
Do I have to have my car insured if I don't use it and it is parked on private land?
Unless you have notified the DVLA that your vehicle is being kept off the road by means of a Statutory off Road Notice (SORN), you are not exempt from having to insure your car.
In line with Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE), it is now a legal requirement for the registered keeper of a vehicle to insure it even if it is not being used and/or is parked on private land. The only exemption to this is if it has a SORN.
