News 26 June to 2 July
Across Essex, almost every investigation begins life as a 999 call and in the last year, we’ve responded to almost 80,000 emergencies.
In that time, our response officers have made more than 17,000 arrests.
The fantastic work that response officers do every single day is being celebrated during a national week of action.
Frontline officers are now equipped with specialist bleed prevention kits that will help them give injured people better emergency care.
Our officers are frequently first on the scene of accidents or incidents where a person may have suffered a laceration or wound that needs urgent medical attention.
The bleed kits - containing a trauma dressing, a chest seal, a pack bandage, a tourniquet, gloves, scissors, a foil blanket, and a mouthguard for giving CPR - give officers the tools they need to treat injuries and prevent people from entering hypovolemic shock or even dying from blood loss.
Daniel O'Brien
Family of survivor of sexual abuse thank investigating officers
The family of a girl abused over a two-year period has thanked Essex Police after her abuser was jailed for 15 years.
Daniel O’Brien abused a girl over a two-year period between 2017 and 2019.
Our investigation began when the offences were reported to us in 2021.
Work by our specialist Child Abuse Investigation Team led to the 38 year-old being charged with three counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of assault by penetration.
He was convicted on all counts in April this year following a trial at Basildon Crown Court.
At the same court on Thursday 27 June, O’Brien, of Kursaal Way, Southend, was jailed for a total of 15 years, given an extended licence of three years, and put on the sex offenders’ register for life.
He has also been made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life and given a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and witnesses indefinitely.
Shoebury: Boy arrested following support from off duty police officer
A 16-year-old boy is currently in custody in connection with an attempted murder in Shoebury in May.
Officers were called to Southend High Street at around 7pm on Friday, 28 June following reports of a fight involving a group of boys.
Prior to Essex Police arrival and following information that a boy in the group may be in possession of a knife, an off-duty Metropolitan Police Service Officer pursued the boy on foot and managed to detain the suspect.
When Essex Police officers arrived, the 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and possession of a class B or C drug.
He was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, in connection with a serious assault Chapel Road in Shoebury on 19 May.
Searches in a nearby bin also resulted in a recovery of a knife.
Lloyd Miller
Prolific shoplifter jailed
A prolific Southend shoplifter has been jailed for four months and banned from all Co-op stores and BP garages in Essex for three years thanks to work by town centre team officers.
Lloyd Miller, 33, of no fixed address, carried out 25 thefts from a number of stores in Westcliff, Hockley, Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea between 1 April and 17 May this year.
In total, Miller stole alcohol, meat, ready meals, chocolates, delicatessen foods and other groceries, valued at more than £1,800.
He was arrested on 17 May and later charged. At Southend on Sea Magistrates’ Court on 20 June he was convicted of theft and jailed for a total of four months. He was also ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.
Miller was also made the subject of a three-year criminal behaviour order which bans him from all Co-op and BP stores in Essex, the One Stop in Spa Road, Hockley, and The Range in London Road, Southend.
Miller was arrested by officers from Southend Town Centre Team. They launched Operation Raker last year to target persistent offenders responsible for thefts, assaults and public order offences.

Secure your windows
With summer finally underway, burglars target windows as they can offer easier access than doors. Check how your windows look from the outside, removing potential access points where you can.
Tips for windows that are within reaching distance:
1. Laminated glass or security film is recommended for ground floor and accessible windows.
2. A sash stop prevents anyone opening the sash window enough to climb through.
3. Key operated locks are recommended for window types that open out, rather than up, and any ground floor or accessible windows. Remember, window locks are only effective if used, so check that you have locked them before you leave home or go to bed.
4. Window opening restrictors allow you to ventilate your home but make sure they can’t be picked and unlocked from outside.
Be fraud smart
If the hot weather is tempting you to book a holiday or maybe a short break away, remember to do your research. If something looks too good to be true it probably is.
Stay scam savvy by reading online reviews from reputable sources before making any bookings.
You can also confirm if an accommodation really exists by verifying the address through web searches and online maps.
Always check that travel company is a member of a trade body e.g., ATOL
How can I / my solicitor / insurance agent obtain a copy of a collision report following a road traffic collision?
Not all collisions require a police officer to complete a collision report.
In some instances a collision report will not be released until the police file has been finalised.
If you are a solicitor or an insurance agent, you can apply on behalf of your client for a copy of any existing collision reports the police have.
People can also apply for collision reports or request details of third parties involved in a collision if they are representing themselves in civil proceedings.
