After more than 30 years as a detective, Assistant Chief Constable Kevin Baldwin shared his best advice with the newest officers joining Essex Police at last Friday’s Passing Out Parade.
The class of 5/23, made up of 30 men and 23 women, took their oaths at a special ceremony led by ACC Baldwin, who joined policing in 1992.
Among the special guests at the ceremony were his family, including serving police office and ACC Baldwin’s son, PC Nick Baldwin.
Fyfield: Cyclist injured following collision during Ride London
We are investigating a collision during the Ride London event where a cyclist sustained serious spinal injuries.
A bike and a car were in collision in Ongar Road, Fyfield at around 10.25am on Sunday 26 May.
It was reported the vehicle – believed to be a silver Ford Focus – had entered a road that had been closed to allow the Ride London event to take place.
It then left the scene.
The cyclist sustained four fractures to their vertebrae.
We believe there will be a significant number of people who will have witnessed what happened and we need them to come forward.

Pair jailed for total of at least 64 years for murder of Robert Powell
The family of a man killed in a drive-by shooting outside a party have thanked our officers after two men were jailed for a total of at least 64 years for his murder.
Robert Powell, 50, was gunned down after leaving a party in Roydon, Harlow, in the early hours of 13 June 2020.
The principal organiser of the hit, Nana Oppong, 44, and co-defendant Israar Shah, 39, have been convicted of murder.
On Friday 31 May, they were sentenced to life imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court.

Man sentenced to eight years after being found guilty of rape
A man, who sexually assaulted a woman in 2020 has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of rape.
Colin Richard Higgins, 54 of Copperfield, Chigwell appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday, 31 May where he was sentenced, concluding a four-year investigation by Essex Police Crime and Public Protection Command.
Essex Police received a report on 17 June 2020 of a woman being seriously sexually assaulted the previous day. After assaulting her, Higgins said “you’re not going to call the police are you” before leaving.
Higgins was arrested on the day of the report and later charged with rape of a woman over 16 and two counts of breach of a restraining order.
Following a four-day trial at Chelmsford Crown Court which began on Monday, 13 May, the jury found him guilty of rape and one count of breach of a restraining order.

Colchester: Ballin’ with a Bobby is back
Essex Police have teamed up with the Essex Rebels and Active Essex for a fourth consecutive year to provide free basketball sessions to communities in Colchester.
Ballin’ with a Bobby is open to boys and girls of school age and has proved enormously popular over its first three summers with 300 youngsters showing up to shoot some hoops and show off their skills.
The project, initiated by PC Dex Adams of the Colchester Community Policing Team, aims to keep young people active throughout the summer, divert them away from anti-social behaviour and crime, and build positive relationships with the police.
Billericay: Tribute to ‘beautiful, kind soul’ after fatal collision
The family of a 19-year-old woman have paid tribute to her after she passed away following a collision in Billericay in April.
Ellie-Mae Hill was one of four people in a car that was involved in a single-vehicle collision at the junction of Pipps Hill Road and Oak Road in Billericay at around 12.40am, Thursday 25 April.
Four people were taken to hospital. Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, Ellie later died in hospital. Her family continue to be supported by our officers while our investigation continues.
We received a call at 9.50pm on Tuesday 28 May reporting two people had been seriously injured at an address in Cambridge Road.
When officers attended they found a woman in her 50s and a man in his 20s injured and, sadly, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives investigating the deaths have charged a man with two counts of murder.
Calogero Ricotta, 63, of Cambridge Road, Ugley, faces two charges of murder and one count of actual bodily harm. He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 31 May.
Maria Nugara, 54, and her son Giuseppe Morreale, 29, lived in Ugley and sadly both died at the scene.
Harlow: Pair guilty of murdering man in drive-by shooting
Two men have been convicted of carrying out the killing of 50-year-old Robert Powell in Roydon, Harlow, on 13 June 2020.
Nana Oppong, 43, and Israar Shah, 39, organised and carried out the killing of 50-year-old Robert Powell in Roydon, Harlow, in the early hours of 13 June 2020.
Mr Powell, who had left a party at an address in Water Lane at around 4.45am, was shot eight times and later died in hospital.

This week we remember
Charles Norwood
Charles Norwood served with Essex County Constabulary from 1 Feb 1911. On 31 May 1915 Charles volunteered for military service at Shoeburyness Garrison, enlisting with 245th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery serving as Sergeant 122436. He suffered the effects of a gas attack and died on 4 June 1917 from the injuries that he had received.
