Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2025

The latest Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) estimated 9.4 million incidents of headline crime (which includes theft, robbery, criminal damage, fraud, computer misuse, and violence with or without injury) in the survey year ending (YE) March 2025. This was 7% higher than last year’s survey (8.8 million incidents in YE March 2024), mainly because of increases in fraud.
Police figures continued to show shoplifting offences at record levels.
Developing a combined measure of domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking, England and Wales: July 2025

For the first time, we have produced a new estimate combining the prevalence measures of domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking from the CSEW. This will become the main measure for monitoring the Government's ambition to halve violence against women and girls (VAWG) in a decade within the Safer Streets Mission.

Domestic abuse estimates for year ending (YE) March 2024 and YE March 2025 are derived from a new set of CSEW questions to provide a better measure of domestic abuse.

Accessing our data
Our CSEW microdata can be accessed through the UK Data Service that has End User Licence versions of datasets going back to 1983, or the Secure Research Service that enables access for approved researchers to CSEW microdata for sensitive data and the self-completion module.

StatsUserNetwork is a forum for users and producers of official statistics to share knowledge, ask questions, and discuss all things data. We are pleased to announce that the new version of the online discussion forum, previously known as StatsUserNet, is live. The forum has been reworked following extensive user research and engagement, and now has a number of new features including:
- better profile creation to connect users with similar interests
- reorganising the site by groups, so users can focus on the statistical topics that are important to them
- options for users to publish/share information in a variety of ways, from simple forum comments to content-rich blogs
You can sign up right now by going to the StatsUserNetwork home page and following the sign-up instructions. Useful guidance on getting started on the new site can be found in the ‘About us’ section located in the top toolbar. The team are also hosting some demonstrations of the new site which you can sign up to attend here.
