Fertility treatment 2023: trends and figures report
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority’s (HFEA) annual statistical publication shows that almost 21,000 babies were born through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in 2023, accounting for 1 in 32 UK births. This is an increase from 2013 where the figure was 1 in 44 births. The number of patients increased by 11% over the same period.
While birth rates have risen, inequalities in outcomes remain. In recent years, Asian and Black patients had lower birth rates than White patients and patients from a mixed ethnic background. The IVF multiple birth rate fell to 3.4% in 2023, one of the lowest rates in the world.
Charting the course towards improved life expectancy in Scotland
This report focuses on exploring different sources of projected estimates up to 2035, to inform the Population Health Framework about Scottish life expectancy.
The data is from birth projections for both males and females and encompasses a review of routinely published projections and scenarios, and the findings of a bespoke analysis conducted by Public Health Scotland in January 2025.
The impact of adverse pregnancy events on earnings and employment, England 2014 to 2022
On Wednesday 11 June, the ONS published the impact of adverse pregnancy events on monthly employee earnings and employment.
This dataset examines changes in monthly pay and employee status following an adverse event during pregnancy. The data include stillbirths, neonatal deaths, miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and molar pregnancies. The comparison is from one year before the event.
These events were found to cause a decrease in earnings, with some leading to a total loss of almost £14,000 in earnings over five years.
Impact of health conditions requiring hospitalisation on earnings, employment and benefits receipt
Last week, the ONS published its latest analysis as part of a wider programme exploring the financial impact of specific health events, diagnoses and interventions.
Using de-identified NHS, HMRC, and DWP data linked to census records, the report examines how major health conditions requiring hospitalisation affects individuals’ earnings, employment, and benefit receipt.
The findings show that all major conditions were associated with sustained earnings losses, reduced likelihood of paid employment, and increased benefit receipt over five years, post-diagnosis.
