Crime for England and Wales transformation
In April, we published our Crime Survey for England and Wales transformation research article which describes research undertaken into the feasibility of a multi-mode design for the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) Screener module.
In March, we held our annual Crime Surveys User Conference in collaboration with the Home Office and the UK Data Service.

Crime in England and Wales: year ending December 2024

The latest CSEW estimated 9.6 million incidents of headline crime (which includes theft, robbery, criminal damage, fraud, computer misuse, and violence with or without injury) in the survey year ending (YE) December 2024. This was 14% higher than last year’s survey (8.4 million incidents in YE December 2023), mainly because of increases in fraud and theft.
Police figures continued to show shoplifting offences at record levels.

Nature of crime tables: year ending March 2024

Annual data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). Data include when incidents happened, information about offenders, the victim’s perception of the incident. Datasets include violence, robbery, bicycle theft, burglary, criminal damage, personal and other theft, other household theft, vehicle-related theft, and fraud and computer misuse.
Sources of support and perceptions of safety among children in England and Wales: year ending March 2024

The 10- to 15-year-olds CSEW estimated 3.5% of 10- to 15-year-olds do not currently have an adult they can trust in their life and 3.9% were suspended or excluded from school in the last 12 months. It also estimated that 48.3% had seen or heard about a violent incident involving people they knew of a similar age in the last 12 months and just over a quarter (26.2%) had seen online content showing violence between groups of young people or drug dealing.

There were 570 victims of homicide recorded in year ending (YE) March 2024, 3% lower than the previous year (585 victims)

Our CSEW microdata can be accessed through the UK Data Service that has End User Licence versions of datasets going back to 1983, or the Secure Research Service that enables access for approved researchers to CSEW microdata for sensitive data and the self-completion module.
