Replacing the Research Accreditation Service (RAS)

Paper Survey Icon

Last month we wrote to all accredited researchers and users of the Secure Research Service (SRS), about upcoming plans to replace the Research Accreditation Service (RAS).

The Project Accreditation Service for SRS (PASS) and People & Projects Service (PPS) will provide a new route for all project applications and researcher accreditation when they are introduced later this year.

This update serves to provide more details for our stakeholders about how to prepare for the upcoming change and what to expect when the new services are introduced.

Timelines

In preparation for the switch to the new services, there will be a brief period where RAS is closed to migrate RAS data to PASS and PPS.

As such, no new applications can be started or submitted in RAS from Friday 4 April.

PASS and PPS will then be available from Tuesday 29 April.

During this window, users will not be able to start accredited researcher applications, new project applications or request changes to live projects.

Users with in-progress applications that have not been completed before Friday 4 April will be contacted directly to progress their application.

Project changes and new applications

If you need to make any changes to an existing project, please do so by Friday 4 April, as you will be unable to submit any further changes to your projects until the migration is complete.

If you wish to apply to become an accredited researcher or submit a new project application for the SRS or the IDS, you may   do so before the RAS migration window detailed above. Application times and processes may vary during the migration period.

If your submission is able to  wait for the new services to be available, we would encourage users to make use of the new routes from Tuesday 29 April.

Changes to Safe Researcher Training (SRT) and ID checks

The migration to new systems provides an opportunity to review our existing accreditation processes. We are currently working on changes to the booking method for Safe Researcher Training (SRT), with an aim to providing a streamlined solution for those going through the accreditation process. To further enhance the ‘Safe people’ aspect of the Five Safes framework, we plan to introduce an ID checking process as part of researcher accreditation.

Further details on these changes will be shared before implementation, but it is envisaged that these will only impact newly accredited researchers, or researchers who are obtaining re-accreditation after expiry.

We look forward to launching our transformed services and will be in touch shortly with some additional information about preparing for the transition to PASS and PPS.

Users with an active project, or an in-progress researcher accreditation, or project application for the SRS or IDS will receive specific communications closer to the migration to prepare them for any project-specific changes.
