Characteristics of women with an endometriosis diagnosis in England: 2011 to 2021
Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition which has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts. This is the first comprehensive study into the characteristics of anyone who has received an endometriosis diagnosis in an NHS hospital in England.
We analyse a decade of endometriosis diagnoses taking place in NHS hospitals, linked to anonymised Census 2011 data to quantify which groups are most likely to receive a diagnosis.
Our results show the odds of receiving an endometriosis diagnosis vary significantly by sociodemographic characteristics in England.
The impact of NHS Talking Therapies on monthly employee pay and employment status
This release is part of a package of work exploring the impact of specific healthcare interventions and diagnoses on earnings and employment status. It uses anonymised NHS and HMRC PAYE data, linked to anonymised 2011 Census data.
We looked at changes in monthly employee pay and employee status following the completion of NHS Talking Therapies treatment, a service providing treatment for common mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Future work will explore the link between health and work outcomes by examining the impact of endometriosis diagnosis, and health interventions for diabetes and musculoskeletal conditions.

Sex and gender harmonised standards
The Government Statistical Service (GSS) harmonisation team has recently announced a new phase of work towards developing harmonised standards for sex and gender identity data collection. The workplan sets out how the team will undertake a thorough review of current approaches to the measurement of sex and gender identity. In our latest blog, Emma Rourke, Deputy National Statistician for Health, Population and Methods, reflects on the work so far and our next steps.
In 2025, we will be holding a series of regional events across the UK to listen to stakeholder needs on the topics of sex and gender identity. If you would like to receive information about these events, please register your interest by completing this short form.
While this work is being carried out, we have created interim guidance for producers of statistics and researchers who are currently using the gender identity question.
