Deaths registered in England and Wales: 2023
Registered deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death. Contains death rates and death registrations by area of residence and single year of age.
This release adds further detail to the data we published in May regarding deaths registered in 2023.
Main points
- As previously published in our May release, in 2023, there were 581,363 deaths registered in England and Wales, which was an increase of 0.7% compared with 2022 (577,160 deaths).
- Age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) in England and Wales decreased compared with 2022, to 832.6 deaths per 100,000 females (a reduction of 0.9%) and to 1142.1 deaths per 100,00 males (a reduction of 0.7%).
- The North East was the region of England with the highest age-standardised mortality rates for both males and females (1,290 deaths per 100,000 males and 947.2 deaths per 100,000 females). This is the second consecutive year the North East had the highest rate for both males and females.
- In Wales, the highest age-standardised mortality rate for males was in Merthyr Tydfil (1,586.5 deaths per 100,000) and for females was in Blaenau Gwent (1,141.6 deaths per 100,000).
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease continued to be the leading cause of death in England and Wales in 2023, with 66,876 deaths registered (11.6% of all deaths).
