Population statistics suite of publications
On 15 July, we will be releasing a suite of publications including the latest official population estimates for mid-2023 for England and Wales. These accredited statistics are the best estimate of the population and will include comparisons with our admin based population estimates (ABPEs), which is a key part of our population statistics transformation.
Updated data tables of UK population estimates 2011-2022 will be published now that National Records Scotland have rebased estimates drawing on Scotland’s Census 2022. It will include data for the UK at local authority level by single year of age and sex.
The evolving methodology for population and migration statistics and the design of the system will be described in both technical and non-technical articles, demonstrating the move towards an admin-based system.
We are aiming for APBEs to become the official mid-year population estimates in 2025, although this will be dependent on meeting the acceptance criteria we will publish later this year and take into account the feedback we receive.
Therefore, following engagement with our users, we are publishing the first QMI article for ABPEs, an update to the ABPE methodology and a non-technical ‘Understanding ABPEs’ article.
To give assurance to our users on the approaches we are taking, we will be updating the quality strategy, as well as a paper to describe the evolution of population and migration statistical design.
We would welcome your feedback on the approach we are setting out – you can contact us by emailing pop.info@ons.gov.uk.
