Journeying through modern life

On 8 April we published our most recent version of the 'Milestones: journeying through modern life' article.

This release revisits the key milestones in life that most of us experience, like moving out of the family home, starting full time work, moving in with a partner, and having a first baby.

The article explores the average age people reach these milestones and how they have changed over time. These events are broken down by age and sex, and also include milestones like first marriage, buying a home, owning a home outright, and retiring.

Feedback on our demography publications

In January we published our latest population estimates by marital status and living arrangements for England and Wales. As part of our review of publications, we are seeking feedback from users on any needs that we are not currently meeting.

Recent releases

Population estimates

Our Population estimates released on 19 March provide national population estimates broken down into small geographical areas such as Super Output Areas, health geographies, electoral wards, Parliamentary constituencies and National Parks for England and Wales: mid-2021 and mid-2022.

On 26 March we published the latest UK population estimates for mid-2022. This release includes national and subnational mid-year population estimates for the UK and its constituent countries by administrative area, age, and sex.

Following the publication of our rebased mid-year population estimates for the period mid-2012 to mid-2021, our rebasing article published on 9 April, explores impacts of the rebasing at the Local Authority (LA) level. It also includes an overview of the LAs and ages most affected by unattributable population change (UPC), case studies exploring the components of change that impacted the rebased population estimates of five LAs, and allows users to see impacts for their own areas.

Travel and tourism

On 26 March we published overseas travel and tourism, monthly data. This dataset includes seasonally and non-seasonally adjusted estimates of completed international visits to and from the UK.

Electoral statistics

Today we released Electoral statistics, UK: December 2023. This provides the number of electoral registrations for Parliamentary and local government elections as recorded in the electoral registers for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for 1 December 2023.
