Latest news and updates about our population, migration, census, and transformation towards admin-based statistics

National population projections

On 30 January we will be publishing National population projections: 2021-based interim. National population projections (NPPs) provide an indication of the potential future population size of the UK and its constituent countries.

This release will use the latest available population data including Census 2021 and new international migration assumptions using the latest estimates of international migration.

It will also use assumptions for cross border migration, fertility and mortality from 2020-based interim NPPs. NPPs are widely used in planning, for example, fiscal projections, health, education, and pensions.

Update: consultation on the future of population and migration statistics in England and Wales

On 14 December we published a consultation update that includes the number of responses by sector and outlines how we engaged with users of population and migration statistics both before and during the consultation. It also explains how we are carrying out our analysis of the responses. You can read this update on our website. This meets our commitment to publish a consultation update by 18 January.

Analysis of the consultation responses is ongoing and will be published alongside the publication of the recommendation on the future of population and migration statistics.

Population statistics releases on ageing and life expectancy

We recently published related data and analyses on life expectancy and estimates of the very old.

Our National life tables – life expectancy in the UK: 2020 to 2022 bulletin shows trends in period life expectancy for the UK and constituent countries, reflecting increased mortality in 2020-2022 during the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Our Estimates of the very old, including centenarians, England and Wales: 2002 to 2022 bulletin describes changes in the estimated size of the 90 years and over population in England and Wales, and includes analysis of the numbers of centenarians over time.

Identities

In case you missed it, in December our Ethnicity, National Identity, Language and Religion topic team published three analysis articles using data from Census 2021.

The Cornish identity release covers topics like, age, health, employment and occupation, and housing and accommodation characteristics.

Our Sikh identity release explores the outcomes of people who identified as Sikh compared with the usual resident population. And our most recent Jewish identity release covers characteristics and outcomes for people who identified as Jewish through the religion and ethnic group questions.

Admin-based population estimates

Our Admin-based population estimates: local authorities in England and Wales, mid-2021 to mid-2023 release covers updated admin-based population estimates for all local authorities in England and Wales, mid-2021 to mid-2022 and provisional estimates for mid-2023.

Dynamic population model

Our Dynamic population model, improvements to data sources and methodology: local authorities in England and Wales, mid-2021 to mid-2023 release includes an update on the data and methodology used by the dynamic population model (DPM) to produce admin-based population estimates (ABPEs).

Veterans

Our Veterans’ Survey 2022, demographic overview and coverage analysis, UK: December 2023 release contains coverage and sample bias analysis of the Veterans’ Survey 2022, with weighted estimates for veteran responses in the UK by personal characteristics.
