Reminder: Consultation completion deadline is 26 October 2023
If you use population, migration and social statistics please make sure you have your say on how our proposals to move to an administrative data-based system meet your needs compared to the current system based on a ten-yearly census.
Your input will be essential evidence in making our recommendations to Government. In particular, it is really important we understand your needs in terms of topics, frequency and the geographic level you use our statistics. For example, very local, local authority level or Wales only.
There’s only eight days until the consultation closes, so please respond now.
If you have any questions about any aspect of the consultation, please email the Outreach and Engagement team. You can also attend one of our webinars, which take place on:
If you have already responded, thank you for taking part.
Updates
2023 population and migration releases
In September 2023, the decision was taken to postpone 3 publications until November 2023:
- Mid-year population estimates (MYE): June 2022
- Rebased population estimates: 2012-2021
- Revised UK international migration statistics: 2012-2021
This postponement ensures consistency in the statistics which are made available, avoids potential confusion and allows the ONS to produce the best possible statistics.
In November, these statistics will be released alongside the latest long-term international migration estimates (June 2023). We will also be publishing supporting information including methodology and research updates.
National Population Projections will follow. The provisional dates are:
- 2021-based interim NPPs (using Census 2021 and latest international migration estimates and new assumptions) - January 2024
- 2022-based NPPs (using the latest census data (including from Scotland), new assumptions and a range of variants) - October / November 2024
- Subnational population projections (SNPPs) release (England) - Early 2025
We are aware of user needs for an updated set of SNPPs and are looking to publish the SNPPs as quickly as practically possible in 2025.
Please see our release calendar for updates.
