Alternative populations, England and Wales: Census 2021
10 October 2023
Today, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) published an article on alternative populations using Census 2021 data.
Comparisons are made between the local authority out of term and workday populations compared with their usual resident populations.
The article provides analysis on the workday population compared to the usual resident population at local authority level by characteristics like:
age and sex age
ethnic group
health
industry
hours worked
main language
Census 2021 took place during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a period of unparalleled and rapid change; this will have affected where people worked and studied. Care should be taken in using these data for planning and policy purposes.
