Today, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will publish experimental statistics for 2021 and 2022 using data from the Annual Population Survey (APS).
The release provides breakdowns by region, sex, age, legal partnership status, ethnic group and socio-economic classification. A bulletin containing discussion of the key findings for 2022 and important differences to consider when considering Census 2021 results accompanies the dataset.
As the estimates are derived from a survey, measures of uncertainty are provided around the estimates in the tables.
The main points of this analysis include:
- the household population of the UK aged 16 and over who identified as heterosexual or straight decreased to 93.4%
- a continued increase in those who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) to 3.3%
- men were more likely to identify as gay or lesbian than women, women were more likely to identify as bisexual than men
- almost 1 in 10 of those aged 16 to 24 years identified as LGB, and how this proportion changes with age
- the majority of those identifying as LGB had never entered a marriage or civil partnership
