Crime Survey for England and Wales updates

Crime survey estimates

In July 2023 we published a full year of Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) data since face-to-face data collection restarted following the pandemic. The Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2023 bulletin contains a full suite of datasets comparing CSEW data back to the pre-pandemic year ending March 2020. We will start comparisons with the previous year in our year ending September 2023 quarterly publication when we will have two full years of face-to-face data collection.

Crime against children

We also published the first estimates of crime against children since the year ending March 2020. A blog highlighting the challenges of measuring crimes against children post-pandemic accompanied the data tables.

Transforming the crime survey

Work to transform the CSEW is progressing well. A new multimodal panel design includes second wave telephone interviews. Additional work is being conducted to optimize the use of face-to-face with telephone interviews to estimate crime rates, while mitigating any introduced bias. We are exploring online data collection methods, with recent findings highlighted in the Transformation of the CSEW research report. These developments support more efficient, resilient, and robust data collection. Other advancements include the redesign of surveys for 10 to 15 year olds, detailed in the Transforming Children’s Crime Statistics report.

More information on our research and development is on our Centre for Crime and Justice and Progress Update – July 2023 webpages.

Recent publications

A full list of our publications is available on the Crime and Justice webpage.

Sexual offences in England and Wales overview: year ending March 2022 estimated that 2.3% of people aged 16 years and over interviewed as part of the CSEW were victims of sexual assault, including attempts in year ending March 2022. Police recorded crime showed a 31% increase in offences recorded during the same period compared to the previous year. Data from organisations supporting sexual assault victims also reported an increase in demand in recent years.

Developing a new measure of domestic abuse: April 2023 provided an overview of redevelopment of questions to measure domestic abuse in the CSEW and expanded upon two previous research updates, detailing further work and testing conducted in recent months. New survey questions on the CSEW from April 2023 as part of a split-sample trial were presented alongside plans for measuring prevalence of domestic abuse and controlling or coercive behaviour.

Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2023 identified a decrease of 15% in total crime compared with year ending March 2020 pre-coronavirus pandemic. Police recorded crime for lower volume but higher-harm offences that the CSEW does not cover or capture well, have generally increased in the last year but remain below pre-coronavirus pandemic levels.
