Drivers of international migration
As part of our public consultation on the future of population and migration statistics, we are seeking views from users about potential alternative definitions and breakdowns of population and migration that we do not currently provide. One of those we are already aware of is the need for more context on the drivers of international migration. The latest National Statistical blog from Jay Lindop, Head of the Centre for International Migration, explains how we are using administrative data to shed more light on the reasons people migrate to the UK.

International migration statistics webinar: 17 August 2023
What international migration statistics do you need that are not met by our official statistics on long-term international migration?
ONS are developing an additional set of statistics that encompasses alternative definitions and patterns of migration, including short-stay migrants such as seasonal workers and circular migrants.
On 17 August, join us to engage with the team producing the new estimates and help us to develop a broader range of statistics on international migration.
Consultation on the future of population and migration statistics in England and Wales
We shared in last month’s newsletter that we have launched a public consultation on our proposals for a new approach to population and migration statistics. Your input is essential evidence for the National Statistician’s recommendations to Government on the future of population and migration statistics, and the census.
We encourage you to respond and to circulate to anyone who may be interested.
The consultation is easy to complete and is available in English and Welsh. Please email us or call us on 01329 444972 if you need any help.
Travel and tourism update
The travel and tourism reform project exists following a review of travel and tourism statistics that commenced in 2019. In 2022, we published a final report which proposed new ways for collecting and presenting these statistics. Following a year of research, we have now moved on to the implementation stage of our project and have recently released a project update on progress and recent publications. We would love to hear from users and producers of statistics to help us create a vibrant online community for discussions about statistics.
