New dataset available via NISRA and ADR NI
The Educational Outcomes Linkage (EOL) 2018/19 is now available for use by accredited researchers via Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and Administrative Data Research Northern Ireland (ADR NI).
The EOL 2018/19 is a longitudinal database of post primary schools’ data for pupils aged 14 and over in Northern Ireland. The EOL links together datasets held by the Department of Education Northern Ireland (DE): the Schools Census (including Attendance data), School Leavers Survey and Exams Database. Work is under way to include three further years of DE data, 2019/20 and 2021/22, within the EOL.
The EOL can be accessed via NISRA’s secure environment or via the ONS SRS. For further information about the EOL dataset, and how to access it, visit the EOL section of the NISRA website.

Annual User Experience Survey
Thank you for your support
A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to tell us about their experience of using the SRS over the past 12 months, by completing the 2023 annual user experience survey. We use the results to measure trends in service satisfaction and gain insights into what’s working well, and what’s not.
We were delighted to learn that 85% of you found our SRS support teams helpful during the process of applying for Accredited Researcher status, an increase of 24% compared to last year. Satisfaction with the quality and range of data owned and managed by SRS also scored highly (81% and 79% respectively). You also told us that you want:
This year, the insights from the survey are feeding into the development of the Integrated Data Service (IDS) and are more valuable than ever before. You told us you were least satisfied with the following four areas in the SRS:
-
output release policy and process
-
waiting times for output releases
- waiting times for project applications
- platform performance
We’ll be sharing more information in the coming months about how we’re building the IDS to meet your needs, and how it will deliver an enhanced user experience in these four areas. Look out for updates in upcoming newsletters.

Updates on the transition to the Integrated Data Service
We have been working hard to collate questions received from SRS Users about the IDS and the transition to the new service. Answers have now been sent to those who registered to attend April's IDS Showcase. If you did not register to attend, we will soon be adding a designated page on our website where you will be able to view answers and the most up-to-date information.
The IDS is still under development, and we are currently in a technology and user discovery phase. We will endeavour to add information as soon as it becomes available, but look out for more dedicated communications with clearer timelines and plans over the next few weeks.
Pilot projects
The transition from SRS to IDS involves all projects, users, and data. Before we start the migration of all users, we want to run some initial pilot projects, helping us to shape the IDS and ensure that it meets the needs of our users. This is a crucial stage in the development of the new service, enabling the testing of assumptions and the end-to-end project transition process. Projects using specific datasets and tools will be contacted shortly inviting them to participate. There are specific criteria for pilot projects at this stage, so please only get in touch if you are invited to take part in the pilot.

Dataset of the month
The Workplace Employment Relations Study
The Workplace Employment Relations Study (WERS) is a national survey which aims to provide large-scale, statistically reliable evidence about a broad range of employment relations and practices in Britain. The survey collects data from employers, employee representatives and employees in a representative sample of workplaces. WERS has been undertaken six times: 1980, 1984, 1990, 1998, 2004 and 2011.
The 2011 WERS sample consisted of a panel sample containing all the workplaces that had taken part in WERS 2004 and were still in existence in 2011, and a stratified random sample of establishments drawn from the Inter-Departmental Business Register in 2010. Weights were devised to enable the panel sample to be combined with the fresh sample to form a cross-sectionally representative sample.
The 2011 study collected data from a representative sample of 2,680 workplaces:
-
2,680 workplace managers responsible for employment relations or HR
- 1,002 worker representatives
- 21,981 employees
The data describes key aspects of employment relations, such as management of employment relations, training, employee representation and consultation, collective bargaining, pay determination, health and safety and worker wellbeing and job satisfaction.
Case study of the month
Controlling the spread of Covid-19 in vulnerable settings
Dr Becky Arnold from the University of Keele has developed a flexible simulation code to model the spread of Covid-19 within vulnerable settings. This data-led model has been used to inform the decision making of policy departments by providing evidence and advice about the likely outcomes of potential testing strategies within these settings.
Read more about this project, which was conducted for the UK Health Security Agency, on the ADR UK website.
Dr Becky Arnold also presented this research during this month's fascinating ONS Research Excellence Series talk. Email srs.engagement.team@ons.gov.uk to request a copy of the recording.
Thematic Research Overview: Education
Over the past year, the IDS Analytical Impact Team have explored how data owned or managed by the ONS has been used for education-themed research between December 2011 and March 2022. This work was in close collaboration with the Department for Education and other teams across the ONS SRS. They also collaborated with organisations - Fischer Family Trust Education Datalab, Education Policy Institute, National Foundation for Educational Research, and Manchester Institute of Education – to produce four in-depth case studies on their research projects.
The thematic report consolidates the outcomes and impact of data analysis in the broader field of education and evidences the value of data services to research for the public good.
