Today we have published new analysis on the rising numbers of adults living with their parents.
At the time of Census 2021, there were around 4.9 million non-dependent children. This was a rise of 14.7% from 4.2 million in the 2011 Census.
Non-dependent children are those aged over 18 years who are living with their parents and do not have a partner or child living with them. It also includes those aged 16 to 18 years who are not in full-time education, or have a partner or child living with them.
By the time of Census 2021, just over half (51.2%) of those aged between 20 and 24 years were living with their parents, up from 44.5% in the 2011 Census.
People were living with their parents at increasingly older ages, and in areas where housing is the least affordable.
